Are you reading something that I'm missing? It clearly says Neil Manke decided to charge for it.
He's probably referring to DoD:Source?
I thought he was talking about DOD:S myself too... Not about VALVe forcing Neil to charge.

Like I said earlier: then why the fuck did he post that in a thread about They Hunger, which, coincidently, also turned into a commercial modification, which, coincidently, also upset a number of people. It blatantly implied They Hunger.

Well, just goes to show. If you want Quality over quantity, your going to have to pay for it. :P

Much of the content is almost finished, such as the levels and gameplay. Other sections like sound engineering (except for dialogue recordings) are well underway. However, there’s still a lot of work remaining, for instance we are still using placeholder models for the zombies.

But we already knew that didn't we .

Yup all the models and most of the textures are just that placeholders. To be able to sell this they would have have to license the engine right? Thus he can't use HL2 models as that is not covered in the license agreement.

This will after all be a standalone game, meaning you won't have to own HL2 for it, or am I wrong? Otherwise he wouldn't be able to sell the mod unless Valve gets a piece of the pie.

Licensing the Source engine would be extremely costly though, certainly not within the price range of a very small-time developer. I reckon it's just going to be a modification you'll have to pay for.

They appear to be working out that piece of pie as we speak.
