Anyone know of a good free anti-virus? I seem to have something nasty.

MS Security Essentials test shows 98% detection rate for 545k malware samples

Microsoft Security Essentials Ranks as Best-Performing Free Antivirus

It is the least obtrusive AV I have used. Surprising that it is from Microsoft. You'd expect it to be like Norton!

Ah, that program says it can't run in safe mode, to which I'm currently confined.

Try
-Avast. It's free (but you have to register to extened the 30 days limit).
- Eset Nod32 trial

- Malwarebytes' anti-malware trial
- Spybot

erm, i'll edit again when I think of more.

- SUPERAntiSpyware

Also get Firefox, install ABP and WOT addons.

If something is already on your system, run these:

Malwarebytes (free and excellent)
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Trojan Remover (fully functional and free for 30 days)

I've already run Spybot S&D, and I'm running a malwarebytes scan now. I guess I'll flash it with everything I can.

Thanks for the advice, I'll come back if nothing works.

I'm very careful with my browsing, don't download anything, and for the first time in god knows how long, I caught something. Let's not pull that BS, eh?

Spybot and malwarebytes got rid of whatever it was. Cheers guys.

Now that you're back, keep an eye on Kaspersky's anti-virus. It's $50 US, but they CONSTANTLY have $50 rebate programs. I don't know if any of that translates into Canadia-money, or if you guys get similar offers, but it's worth a shot. Nothing like a free copy of top-notch antivirus.

FT, chase up combofix and run it too. Often times there are scraps that malwarebytes misses that comboxfix will catch....preventing reinfection. Btw...something most people never do is examine what was found and how it got in. If you don't do that you should not assume that the point of entry was closed and fixed. Food for thought!

free.avg.com

They'll try and trick you into buying the full version but they offer a free version that's pretty cool.

Tie that with the free bandwidth monitor such as Networx and you are pretty set with windows Firewall enabled or a free network firewall like SoftPerfect Personal Firewall.

That way you can see if something is listening or sending info.

Actually you don't need any anti-virus at all just make a guest account, and nothing will ever get installed. Only if you log into admin.

That is a good strategy but not entirely trustworthy. There are plenty of exploits that come out that do not need admin privileges because they are exploiting a bug in an OS system (recent jpg sploit in the ms rendering engine) or software (pdf Dec 16 2009 zero day sploit). They seem to come along about every 4 weeks or so.

But using a "guest" account vs box admin with a philosophy of least privilege makes it very very hard. And I would always disable "guest" and user some other name.

Just yesterday I was on a popular gaming site as a normal user and AVG prevented a script from taking IE out of protected mode. Or at least attempting to. A lot of sites are bad joo joo. No avg and I wouldn't have known anything was going on assuming the script was successful.

and avg is free and can be paused at the click of a mouse for when you need a little extra fps in FF. Not to mention if plugs into major browsers and checks a site before you go to it.

For malware, Malwarebytes is top-notch.
For a regular antivirus, I've always used avast because it doesn't hose down low-end systems. I don't trust AVG because they have a bad track history of "accidentally" rolling out updates that kill vital DLL files or remove important files for popular programs like iTunes.

I hate to be rude, but your forum posts indicate the opposite.
