1984

Let me just say first off, please don't lock my post. I do know that it has little to do with FF, but it is a very interesting thought. I'm guessing that most of you have played half life two. Recently, in school, I was reading George Orwell's novel, 1984. Did valve take the concept of city 17 from London, Oceana in the novel? There are so many similarities:

Dr. Breen the so called Counsel is the 'Big Brother' figure.

Gordon seems to play the role of Winston to some extend. A rogue in a strict society.

The scanners keep a strict eye over the citizens of the City 17

The massive TV screens are similar to the Tele-Screens in 1984.

The run down appartments in city 17 are very reminisent of the victory mansions in 1984.

What do you all think about this?

I was 2. 18 years later, I joined the military. Worst. Decision. Ever.

I'd be willing to bet that Mr. Laidlaw was at least a little bit influenced by Mr. Orwell.
Playling HL2 has made me want to read 1984 again, in the worst way. Soon as I finish my second read-through of Hitchhikers Guide...

Didn't someone post this before or am I just experiencing deja vu? Maybe I read about it somewhere else. Maybe I live in a hut made of cheese... maybe...

It was mentioned but never had its own thread.

The simularities you see were intentional. The story for HL2 was based on serveral different books in which a powerful society dominated a less powerful one. If you'll look closely you'll see references to War of The Worlds, 1984, A Brave New World (less so), and also Tripods.

I wasn't meaning he should have used search or anything. I just couldn't remember where I heard it from before. Just wanted to clear that up.
