Then by your definition every game that is released and patched is a "beta"...

See, in the real world, people call the released version Gold.

A gold release is considered to be very stable and relatively bug-free with a quality suitable for wide distribution and use by end users.

Check, check, and check on FF.

Hell, by the "Gold" definition, EA has been releasing betas commercially for years now. BF2 is still a "BETA". Maybe it's Silver? Bronze?

It's amazing how much people made a personal commentary about an agressive internal goal in a dev journal = official release date. There's a reason there was never a release date posted on that in our news. It definitely was a goal at the time, but I know a lot of us knew it was not possible. I knew there was no chance it was happening at the time.
Veteran game developers know a lot more about what challenges to expect in a development cycle...and thats with stable personell, daily communication, a lot more focused time...and they still miss published official release dates. I can't particularily blame them.

take half-life 2 for example lol they kept missing the deadline but they came up with a good game

as the saying goes....good thing's come to those who wait

Doom 3 - was not finishable until the first patch was released, which was about a week after the game was released. The problem was with a switch. You went into a room, cleared the room and the switch would not open the door, so you were stuck. I bought doom3 the day it was released, and it was not a finished product. There were other bugs besides the switch problem.

Quake 4 - Even though I do not play this game anymore there are a couple of patches for it.

Diablo 1 was not finishable until the player updated with the first patch. Once you killed lazarus, the portal did not open to go to diablo. Then there were the getting stuck bugs and random game crashes.

Diablo 2 - its been patched 10 times since its release.

Sin 1 - when you saved a game, the save was hundred megs big. After a few saves, the game took up several gigs in just the saves.

Some of these problems were known about by the developers and still pushed out the door. After all, how can you play test a game all the way through and call it finished, when in fact it can not be played through - like in Doom3.

I am looking forward to playing some FF. Hopefully it will be a lot better then tf2.
