Small point of correction Uber. We actually are given dominion over plants and animals and they may be used as food. It's not, however, broad enough to give a pass to being wasteful.

If we aren't going to kill plants and animals for food, what are we going to eat? Granted, I do agree with your underlying point, that man should not intentionally go out to destroy a species. However, if man takes an area and it's resources to the greater glory of God, then that is permissable. Yes, that could in turn lead to the extinction of a species, but I would not call that a sin.

I agree that all too often nature does take a back seat to profits, but there are situations where "nature" is rightly moved aside for a greater purpose.

Concur (we responded at the same time). We can use resources up to the point of gluttony, then things go downhill.

our intentions are irrelevant in deciding if the earth is currently overpopulated with humans

That is absolutely true, and wasn't my point at all. But thanks for the input!

How very simple and pointless. I am fairly certain people know life needs to feed off life but that isn't what we are discussing. We all know that humans need to eat, but we are arguing over whether or not humans should be okay with our present rate of destruction and resource consumption. I know Scuzzy made a reference to eating an apple which, just like this, misses the point. No one is saying "bad humans, stop eating animals and using resources!", I, and other people on my side of the issue, are saying that we are taking it too far.

I find it fascinating that a very simple ecological concept can bring up such strange points

I find it fascinating that a thread attacking personal freedom became an 8 page semantics rant about the environment.

When is it OK to allow personal freedoms when infringe on other's rights? Do I have the personal freedom to throw trash in my yard? Maybe. Is necessarily helpful to the environment? Not really.
