Back on XP SP3 (a stripped down version). Although I cannot tell the difference in general use, games are actually smoother.
That could be down to: -Having just 1GB of RAM -Video drivers (Win7 drivers though) -The OS of course isn't complete yet

When it comes to getting better game performan on XP or Linux Versus Vista or win7, It is likely the video drivers at the root of the issue. WinXP driver support is quite good in general, especially nvidia...of course the real reason may be because nvidia drivers for Vista tend to be absolute s##t and win7 isn't exactly that much different than vista in comparison to XP.

Yeah, that's what I thought or at least hope temporally it is, as outside of games it feels as smooth as XP.

I have not noticed a difference in playing games. I've been playing Battlefield 2142 since Steam isn't wanting to work for some reason, and on the beta version it wouldn't update. The patch installer would just hang. After I installed the RC, it's all been smooth. So something in it is different than in Vista, because my friend can't get the same game to work in Vista.

Used XP for years but I moved to 7 a few weeks ago and I honestly don't think I want to go back to XP at all. I love all of the interface improvements in 7, although I'm aware some came with Vista, I didn't use Vista so they are pretty fresh to me.
My only gripe with 7 is Creative Labs and their inability to make proper drivers. Even the Daniel_K ones have a annoying bugs with the microphone and 'what u hear' functions. You get random helicopter crackles on the mic jack even with the Daniel_K drivers as well as an awful reverb on 'what u hear', assuming you can actually get it working in the first place. It still amazes me that given how long Vista has been out for, some companies are still almost entirely unable to support their products on a Vista based OS. |

Since Vista and 7 are simular, Vista drivers generally work fine with Windows 7. The main issue is legacy devices (old laptops is a big deal). Since 7 ads a lot of improvement (Networking anyone?), many people might want to move older systems to 7, but that's currently tricky...
I will say that 7 has a lot of built-in drives though. My webcam worked without installing any software. But then again it IS a Microsoft webcam |

Also they've released beta drivers for the original SB Live! series of cards long before they have for the Audigy 2 despite the Audigy 2 being a far more recent card. In fact their website doesn't even list an estimated date for Audigy 2 beta drivers. They've had two years to provide us with some kind of working driver that doesn't have silly pops and crackles and poor sound quality or other bugs. Vista was not a big hit but it still sold quite a few copies and Windows 7 is going to end up selling a great deal more. It's inexcusable that they still don't have working drivers for their product range on these two operating systems. If it was just a W7 beta that they aren't concentrating on then I would almost understand it, but it's the entire 6.x Windows range (Vista etc.). At this point I would happily move to my motherboards on-board sound but for the fact it's even worse at handling mic's than the Audigy 2. If I use on-board sound the noise of my computer (not that loud) drowns out my voice (obviously louder). If I use the Audigy 2, the noise of my computer is barely audible and I am crisp and clear (apart from when it randomly pops/crackles requiring a reboot or two). Companies need to embrace the future, 64-bit computing. |

My Experience Index is higher in the RC than beta. From 2.9 to to a 5.4. Still my hard drive is the lowest rated item.

For those in the States that are interested in buying the Windows 7 upgrade (Home or Pro), the 50% off preorder expires on July 11, 2009
Home = $49 Pro = $99 Note that it is further discounted at www.samsclub.com and www.costco.com if you are a member of either. I decided to bite the bullet skipping Vista and go for the Win7 Pro version, which is basically Home + addtional Windows XP mode. To me that was a no-brainer. |

I was going to do the same thing until I read this article. I don't have a pirated (technically) copy of XP, just used a family disk to install so I don't have access to it often, and that would make it a serious pain if I ran across any issues with new hardware.
On the other hand, I do own a key used on a spare PC but since it requires registration I didn't know if it would let me use the key on both PC's. |

I don't have a link(you could prolly google tho) but I hear they are releasing a family pack for $149, so you get home premium plus the ability to install it on up to 3 computers. Not sure what other deals they have up their sleeves, but I'm waiting a little while to see if they are going to have any more ultimate discounts.

I've seen the Home Premium upgrade going for $50 at Bestbuy with the Pro version going at like 150ish if I remember correctly. I wouldn't mind having Ultimate for my laptop, and probably just Premium for my desktop. Either way, I'd rather have 7 than Vista, though Vista just has annoyances for me. It hasn't been too bad.
