I finally got the beta from pirate bay (arrr) and installed it under a VM using the key that MS gave me awhile ago.
It's fairly nice. I was expecting a bit more from IE 8 in the JavaScript department (why are we still using window.event?), but other than that the system seems fairly nice. Hopefully by the time it's released IE 8 will be even more standards compliant than it currently is. |

They took the beta down off the Microsoft site on the 10th or so. I tried downloading it several times beforehand but never got it to work.
As far as IE: I never use IE, but you need cross-browser support so you test things in all browsers. And since IE 8 claims to have better standards support I needed to test it. |

finally jumped aboard and installed it on vmware. im a vm newb, does it automatically only allocate 1gb of ram to the virtual machine? after my install, windows 7 only sees 1gb out of 6gb. but its performance so far is quite good.
Yeah it does, found the setting to change it. Last edited by Zatoichi; 03-15-2009 at 08:03 PM. |

The beta expires August
...and I thought I could get away with just using the beta as my main OS. But, of course, everybody wants that money.

August? How'd you get that date?
Try this and see what you get... Start -> Run -> Winver.exe According to that, I get until July 1st, 2009, just like everyone else... |

If you used build 7057 or whatever the latest one is the date is sometime in 2010.
It's also quite likely that the RC which is due next month (hopefully) will last around a year from it's release. Given how stable the builds are right now, the RC would certainly be usable for a year as a main OS. |

I've never dled a RC before for windows. That's free to the public, right? Or is that only for companies or those gold members and such?

Usually it's for MSDN & TechNet subscribers, as well as companies invited by Microsoft to test out the OS in their business environment; but with the way MS has been handling Windows 7, they may open it up as well to a limited public amount the same way they did with build 7000.
As for the RC1 release, from what I've heard, the beta was originally intended to release on April 20th, 3 months to the day since Beta Build 7000 was released, and the beta was supposed to end in favor for RC1's release; but at this point no one knows except MS... they might be getting alot of important feedback from the beta, that they may wait to release RC1 until later... |

I'm waiting for the public release. I have ~300GB of unpartitioned space ready to install on.
I'm currently using 64-bit Vista without any issues. I'm looking forward to more GUI improvements. Does the RC have the Media Center components in it? I'm looking forward to see how those work. |

Running from my vista partition didn't work. So I installed steam, closed it, and copied my vista install over to the steam folder. Works like a charm... but yet to test any steam games.

It actually works perfectly, the problem I had with the list not showing up right fixed itself.
