Aye, emphasizing that the training is the first thing any new player should do...

Maybe some code that has an automatic pop-up window within the game the first time you ever boot it up that demands you go through the training or skip it at your own risk?

Standardize security buttons.

Do you need to bind +use or not?

Is there any benefit on +using on current buttons over touching?

Yes, please standardize security buttons by allowing both +use and actually touching the button to activate it. When touching a button is not possible, if close enough to use +use, you should still be able to press it.

from the way i see it think making it more like this would be better.

buttons: would be used almost primarily for activating the security. As well as anything that is on a timer. this creates a standard that everyone knows buttons are for security. its simple and easy for people to grasp just by looking at it.

lever: would be used as an activate/deactivate something until someone comes to deactivate it. for instant I could activate a draw bridge or something that is only activated once like aardvark trap then goes back up. (which i still think is stupid. )

(team color buttons and team color levers would be nice.) not all maps are very friendly in the color code department.

i think this gives each a clear and distinguished job that covers all of the uses for ff buttons. (im tired of seeing them used interchangeably but not always activated in the same manner.) its inconsistent and annoying to figure out. As you actually have to go test them out to see how they work.

Do you not need to be touching the button to "use" it?

If you don't, I think having all buttons with a use and a touch activation would be splendid.

I know it's a small issue, but it's kind of annoying when some maps have a touch activation and others have only a "use" activation.

And yes, team colors for everything -- grenades, bags, buttons, levers, etc. -- would be a welcome addition.

Does pressing use still stop you moving? Is there any perceivable reason at all for that to happen?

Do you need to be facing directly at the button to use it? Or can you fly by it horizontally, spam your use key, and end up using the button? Sorry if I misinterpreted it, though I do think that making each map either press, each map use, or each map both would be a great idea.

Also Elmo, are you implying that it might be a good idea to simply have the use option rather than either use or smack yourself into it?

You can bind every movement key to +use if you want.

I recall being rather confused by dropdown's button's need for use activation, particularly as there is no indication as to what key you need to press. Practically every other security button is activated by touch. Is there any reason for dropdown's button to be different?

Seemingly very minor things can make or break the overall experience. Anything that increases the player's frustration, even slightly, with no actual benefit to gameplay, should be avoided in my opinion.

I mean, we could be discussing how to make every class useful, new maps, new gamemodes, new training modes, fixing bugs, discussing if the direction ff is going in is the right one (not old school enough for the tfc crowd and not casual/appealing enough for the new age fps crowd), updating the wiki... Anything but buttons.

while I see your point, I still think the little things are also important and in a small way when you add them all up even more important and more importantly easier to achieve than the larger goals which need discussion but so do the little things otherwise they won't get done. if no one talks about a X (glitch, feature, etc...) will it ever get fixed/done/etc...? how else will anyone know about it.

If you've taken a look at the rest of the thread, I made this thread EXPRESSLY for the little issues. (Viewmodel_fov being a cheat was immediately resolved.)

Balance discussions have their own threads, this is for issues that have little room for caustic arguing.
