I never understood why gays get all bent up about this tag "marriage". But then again I am not a national socialist. I would flip the middle finger at the government and say fuck you and your definitions, we love each other and we are living together get the fuck out ma life. I mean what is this supposed benefit they suddenly get? Any automatic benefit of being "married" can be rectified with a little paperwork. I kind of agree with Innoc, this isn't some major civil rights issue. Frankly I don't even give a shit one way or another. You need the governments blessing to be happy.... go for it.

But perhaps the next step isn't to, once again, expand the otherwise narrow definition of marriage, but to altogether abolish the false distinction between married families and other equally valid but unrecognized partnerships.

No, that doesn't mean I want to marry three women at the same time or a goat. It means that I think I should be able to decide what constitutes my family -- whether it's me and my same-sex partner and our toddler, or me and my elderly mother and father, or me and my best friend who want to care for and love each other but not necessarily be intimate. The job of the state is to protect my family and our rights -- not decide that two parents plus kids makes a family and everything else is an exception to the rule at best.

So, for instance, when the government of Canada was charged with expanding the country's conventional definition of marriage to include recognition of gay and lesbian couples, a commission was appointed to study the best path to equality. The commission came back with a startling but sensible option: Get rid of marriage. Not at the religious/ceremonial level -- you can still have your off-white dress and dance party -- but at the governmental level.

I would think anti-government conservatives would certainly agree that the government has no business telling me how or with whom to form a family. For the rest of us who otherwise value the role of government in our lives, benefits and rights can as easily be based on family functions, not forms. If I am my best friend's primary caregiver, then I should be able to sign up to be one of, say, three people who have hospital visitation rights. If I want my closest aunt to be my Social Security beneficiary, why should the government stop me from signing her up? If I can use my cell phone to vote for American Idol, I'm sure I can press a few keys and designate my next of kin.

There's a number of financial and legal benefits that come with being considered 'married'. I implore you to do some research, since there's literally thousands (Depends on the State you live in, however many are federally-granted) of privileges/benefits you gain, and some are extremely important, like the right to see your loved one in the hospital if they are critically injured, the ability to write a living will, etc.

Like I said earlier, the whole gay marriage debate wouldn't even be an issue if being married was not financially and legally beneficial. Shit, I'm straight, but I see no reason to get married other than the legal and financial benefits that come with getting married. I personally see no reason why I need a title, or a diamond ring to profess my love and companionship for someone else, but if you do, more power to you. It's just fucked up that you have to go through this archaic process to get rights and privileges that should be available for everyone.

I totally disagree but what else is new.

But seriously like i said what are the tangible benefits that you cannot fix with a couple of pieces of paper like power of attorney and shit? I don't see them. But I don't live in a national socialist state either. And if they are federally granted I almost bet every one applies to "significant other".

Sure it's easier when you get up and get married, that is kind of fucked up if you think about it. You sign a piece of paper and BAM. Tax benefit, not really. Healthcare benefit? No. And hospitals don't really work on the "next of kin" thing anymore and again you can fix that with a piece of paper just like a marriage license.

Not being an asshole just practical. I think the gov should just do away with it and get the fuck out. You want to proclaim your forever allegiance to someone, do it in private, at the church, at the gay and lesbian center what ever. Our whole idea of a concept of marriage is a based in religion one anyway. If you don't think so then it's just a contract and anyone can draw of a binding contract.

ah while i kinda agree with you, what happens when you have a kid together and just don't take care of it because well your not legally obligated. that's why there's common law marriage. also getting married means tax cuts but in reality i think marriage is more a religious thing, however i think it still might be necessary due to our society. (for the kids man.) also if the government can make cash off of it they will just like any business.

I don't really see a tax advantage to being married. Kids are a good argument but you do not have be married to go to jail for not taking care of your children. Married or not the child bearer (woman) is legally responsible and in most states so is the father. Married or not your dead beat ass is paying child support.
