One example of in depth training within games, is America's Army 3, which is the official U.S. Army Game.
It has loads of interactive training excersizes, down to the complex medic kid people carry where you need select the right treatment for your teammates injury. That really gets you used to the weapons, using iron sights, grenades, etc.. before you get into a multiplayer game.

The reason this mod has such a small player base and doesn't keep new players is because it's just an old archaic game. Yes the graphics are up to date and nice, but at it's core, this is still an old game.
We're not in 1999 anymore, Bhopping, Concing, and Quake-style gameplay isn't the "in" thing anymore. Gaming has moved on. And from what I understand, isn't the whole point of this mod meant to appease the old TF players with a game that delivers an older style TF experience? Under that premise, it shouldn't come as a surprise at all that this mod isn't popular. More than likely the only thing bringing in new players is the "Fortress" name due to TF2's mainstream success so it's still not a big surprise to see these same new players leave when they see how FF compares to TF2. It just isn't the "Contemporary Modern Fortress" that TF2 is. Last edited by Muay; 07-07-2011 at 10:19 PM. |

FUN is the word I think will save this mod. You make this game absolutely unadulterated FUN and it won't matter how old the core of this gameplay is.
In fact, TF2 is an example of how that old core gameplay can be made into something fresh and new. FF may be using HL2 textures on some maps and the FF character models are getting old, but that doesn't mean people won't play. Last 3 days in a row since I've installed my new server, it's been full ALL 3 days. My opinion is that since Source SDK Base is free, and TF2 is free, somehow that is causing this recent boost in players. |

Seeing Rock2 mentioned brought back a lot of memories. Many good times were had beating someone to the last vacant "safe pod", just barely, and then watching them hit the green protective door with their crowbar until they dropped to the ground with a wonderful (read: terribly animated) death grunt. |

Thought I'd post what I think of this matter as I'm kind of a new player myself.
So, I would like to play the game, but I can't as there's no one to play with on public servers, at least not in Europe. It's not about the game being too hard or not fun, though doing conc jumps and such correctly has its challenges. You might suggest doing pickups and I did and I didn't like it. It was some time last year though, this isn't my first time playing FF, and back then I actually did find some pub action. Anyway, the reason why I didn't like pickups was the format: one team attacking, the other defending. Team 1 consisting of any number of scouts and medics, team 2 consisting of a demo, engineer and soldiers/heavies. The defending team would just sit near the flag room, waiting for the scout/medic to try to zoom past you. I know it's the competitive setting but personally I found that incredibly boring and way too restricting. I still see pickups happen multiple times a day on the European server, so that leaves me wondering what those players do when there are no pickups. You'd probably think they would play on pubs but I guess not. In the end I don't think there's much you can do when it comes to the game itself without making it too different from TFC. People usually complain about grenades in TFC, so that's the closest thing I can think of what to change. Last edited by Ratix; 07-10-2011 at 07:44 PM. |

Grenades in FF have a much smaller blast radius than the grenades in TFC.

I've just popped on FF to see who's playing and the Talos server currently has 16/22 people playing. Every night of the week, from roughly this time onwards for sometimes 6 hours from now, there's often a server with plenty of people on it, I can almost guarantee within the next 3 hours the Old Timers Server will fill up quite a lot, it's the time Americans come home from work and play games. And it's night time Europe so that's when Europeans play like me. Throughout the day though, you're probably not going to find a server, apart from weekends when on a Friday, Saturday and sometimes Sunday, servers fill up earlier than weekdays. But go on now and you've got a server to play on

It's simple thing, lets start a weekly/monthly FF game night. This kind of promoting works very well in different mods/communities too.
