the ONLY exceptions are games that were ported (almost) directly like hldm (from qw) and tfc (from qwtf).
face it ... valve has no idea how to make good multiplayer action shooters.
Yea, that's why there are 42,000+ CS Source servers with over 57,000 people playing it right now.

Just because some of the diehard CS vets doesn't like CS Source does not mean it has failed.

Also, wtf are you talking about with hldm being ported from qw? They have literally nothing in common other than being multiplayer FPS games.

Man, I want all the games I work on to "fail" then.

The thing about sequels and ports, if you don't like the new version, play the old one???

Looking at Valve's track record I think this release date will stick. They have already pushed back the date multiple times.

They would have to deal with unreal tournament 3 with which is supposedly coming out on September 3rd if they waited much longer. Poor college students can't afford to buy every game that they like in a short amount of time

Hah, we better get FF out before then, or most of the dev team will probably be too busy playing TF2.

Yeah, usually the release dates you hear are made up by stores, or "rough estimates" by the developer. Valve slips these all the time, but once they say "it will be on store shelves on X," that one usually sticks.

Shit, look at all of the people still playing Evercrack, for instance. That game is what, like 8 years old now? And people are still playing it, even though Everquest II came out two years ago. Ditto for Diablo compared to Diablo II. You can not just consider the "success" of a game; you also have to consider things like people's graphic cards and processing power.

They have EA as a publisher, oh dear "comming ready or not" comes to mind. It will probably be so buggy its unreal tm and will have to be hastily patched introducing at least 4 new exploits.

I doubt Valve will bow to any pressure from EA, though since EA is in charge of the PS3 version, who knows.

Money = power and EA has plenty of that.

I was really concerned about that as well -- so I talked to a couple guys at Valve about it a couple months back. EA is their retail publisher, but has absolutely zero creative control or scheduling control over Valve. Valve was able to muscle a contract like this because of Steam and them being pretty autonomous as a result. EA is looking to make the quick buck on Half-Life's coattails, and since Valve is an extremely financially successful company, they're just shutting up and waiting for the payoff.

it's true. EA has no power over Valve. TF2 won't come out untill it's done.

btw:

I love how as pretty much a rule on the intertubes that anything written in text on a website/forum can be taken as gospel and anything posted as a pic is instantly fake/photoshopped.

We're cranking away on the Orange Box games and have zeroed in on a release date for Half-Life: Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. All three games will be available on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on October 9th. Should be an exciting day.
