I think Crazycarl actually did this but it never made it into release because it was coupled with some other unfinished animation tweaks. Still need to do some more investigation of the models repo and git a public repo setup.

maybe make it a weapon with a player view model? just like a top view of the current detpack but with hands.

Yeah, this is an ancient bug. If there was any sort of reliable way to reproduce it, it might be able to be fixed, but I'm not sure there is.
