I think it's worth it. I'm paying like 380 dollars to get a 640 mb 8800GTS cuz I figure it will last me a good 2-3 years. There's plenty of money to be made lol

I run SLI (two) EVGA 8800 Ultra. Get only one and you won't be whining for a while.

I also want to point out that AMD is supposedly releasing a "Pro" version of the HD 2900 which will cover the "mid-range" cards as well. I'm thinking the Pro version will probably be much less power-hungry and hopefully more efficient/cooler.
I think you'll have to wait for the 2950 series to get a less power hungry version as the 2900Pro will use the same R600 core as the 2900XT.

Granted you did not technically suggest it, but mentioning them is enough. I will be seeing you soon. <_<

Joking. Sorta.

do not at all use the ATi HD 2900

it is a waste of money.

sounds crazy but in a recent bench i cant rmemeber the article but the 1900's benched higher. the only benefit the 2900 has is it can support HDTV resolution and DX10

power / price ratio is too unbalanced.

That only becomes a factor if you plan on hooking a HDTV up to your computer.

Yeah, I know... I have a bit of OCD, so my brain goes wild with the possibilities. I know it is unlikely, but I am constantly plagued by "what if?" scenarios all the time.

Consequently, the resultant paranoid makes me an excellent defensive player in many games, especially TFC... ^.^'

I have caught many people with a grenade because I thought I might have maybe possibly heard a noise coming from a general direction.

i didnt think of that.
anyways it seems the 2900 is leaning more towards media entertainment then gaming. hence the HD prefix. i love my 1900XTX. i plan on getting the crossfire 1900XT so i can have two gfx cards, but this wont be needed for ages to come.

But that's the thing. By the time a crossfire or SLI setup becomes "needed" there is usually a better single card solution out there which means less complexity, less heat, and less chances for stuff to go wrong.

You can NOT futureproof your computer, especially not your card. If you buy now, in two months the prices will be amazingly lower and new technology out.

So buy a DX9 card, THEN wait for DX10 to actually be worth the money.

dx 10 is overrated...

an used 7900gt can be had for $140-150 CAD easy. or an used 1900xt/xtx for $180-200.

The HD prefix comes from the hype around HD. Nothing else.
