Now, when the mercenaries left the island they moved into the PAST because the doctor was still alive on the boat. In a sense they entered a temporal paradox, they knew the doctor was dead and how, but it hadn't happened yet. However, when the rocket left the ship to go to the island it traveled into the FUTURE, because it took longer to get from the boat to the island then it should have. I think the degree at which you enter or leave the island has a good deal to do with the temporal offset.
They would have moved into the future, if they saw the doctor dead on the island before he was dead on the ship.

But the reason I said time goes slower on the island is because when Sayid and Desmond went on the helicopter, Jack and others were worried why it was taking so long for them to report back (they thought it had been 2 days), to which Faraday responded that only about 20 minutes or so had elapsed since they left. Also remember the episode where Faraday launched the "payload"? There was difference in time than what had elapse on the island and how long it was expected to reach the landing spot.

BTW, I don't know if you guys know this or not, or whether the producers did this on purpose, but Daniel Faraday, the physicist, has quite a few similar attributes as Michael Faraday, an English physicist. Michael, a nineteenth century scientist, is consider one of the most influential of all time--an Einstein of his time (before Einstein). He studied magnetism and electricity, namely electromagnetism and electrochemistry. Merely a coincidence?

Nope, most of the names tie in with some sort of historical figure or something else, check out the wikipedia page.

EDIT: Looks like Jack and Claire don't figure it out until after Jack leaves the island. It would explain why he's weirded out by the baby too... I'd guess that at some poitn after they all leave they go back though... it only makes sense.

NO

Thye will only discuss things that have already happened. I only started watching lost about 8 months ago. I had a complete binge through 2 weekends and a week. I watched every episode and then read the summaries at lostpedia. It really helped me understand things that missed during the episodes.

You're right.

The people on the boat had been told about the doctor being dead while he was standing on the boat, that's why I think that it isn't a speed of time thing on the island but rather a time displacement. Question is did the helicopter travel into the past when it went to the boat, or into the future when it headed to the island in the first place.

I don't remember him saying only 20 minutes had passed... I thought he just said, "I'm not worried" probably because he knew of the timeshift. Did he say it was 20 minutes or was it the guys on the boat he talked too?

Tonights episode: The odometer! Kim and I freaked out. Also, nice way to tie up the Jack/Claire thread. I was sure that Jin was going to get blown to bits in that last scene.

The last 2 show as a 2 hour finally.

For those ILLEGAL TORRENTERS out there... They release the first hour and then the second hour split into 2 so you don't need to wait the full two hours to start watching. This was useful when I had night classes during lost

Holy fucking shit. Ok, so we're are watching Lost tonight with the little pop-up things on the bottom. Locke's mother's name is Emily. Ben's mother's name is Emily. Do you think Locke and Ben have the same mother???

Edit: Bah, more subtitles. Doesn't sound like they are.
