i'm rather sceptical of gaming through a fully fledged virtual machine. if the game doesnt run natively, wine *should* be a more logical step than running a complete VM, surely?

I'am wondering why you ever installed vista to start with???

In between windows 98 and XP there was an operating system called millennium. Vista is another millennium. In 5 years people will be calling its microsofts 2nd red headed step child.

no, vista is not the new ME. i disagree.

and windows 7 is not the "Vista is should've been" or w/e. it's just an improvement to vista, a minor one at that. Vista changed a lot under the hood, windows 7 is more for the interface this time around

How Microsoft thinks: We fucked up [OS here]. Time to release a new operating system, which isn't really new at all. We'll steal some 'unique' yet old features from actually decent operating systems and market them as 'new leaps forward in operating system technology" .. Really, it's just a distraction. Driver problems? Hey, about that.. Uhh.. Woah, check this out! A sidebar With gadgets! Oooo, huh?! Then, upgrade the graphical interface a bit so people figure it's a whole new deal when it's the same bullshit as before, and.. Of course, the fuck ups. We'll fix those through more fuck ups. No biggie, right? Windows 7,000,000 is coming out to address these new fuck ups.
How Microsoft should think: We fucked up [OS here]. Let's fix the problems on the operating system we messed up so people who spent hundreds of their possibly hard-earned money can get the best out of the product as promised, instead of cooking up fruad with the release of another operating system.

Security as well...though some of Microsofts changes were puzzling as much as they were ineffective.

my stance on vista:

it's not the crapware that everyone thinks it is, it wont blow up your computer if you install it. But, i also think it's not worth 120 bucks for an upgrade. if you get it in a pre-built, i wouldnt care. but i will not run out and buy it

Just get microsofts operating systems 3-5 years after they are released.
They usually have fixed a decent amount of shit by then :P.

Then why don't many corporations support it for their users? It completely sucks and has many compatibility issues. It's especially shitty for VPN.

For who? There's many ways to implement a tiered security model without being obtrusive and annoying. I think that UAC is a pathetic implementation and far easier to work around to escalate privileges than it should be. It reminds me of gun control laws...the only people it affects are those who weren't trying to do anything wrong to begin with. The turds are going to get around it anyway.

Well I can think of many reasonable justifications for tiered privileges and methods for controlled escalation. Making that work well makes sense for me. Blocking the assholes from being able to compromise you...that makes sense. DRM, OTOH, only hurts the innocent and people that weren't going to steal to begin with.

Perhaps I'm missing your point on DRM? Under what circumstances does DRM make sense? How would you change the implementation?

Again, just so I'm clear, are you suggesting that privilege escalation (ala UAC) has to do with people being dishonest?
