Thread necro, due to batshit craziness.
Playing a Freeroll on FullTilt (I have an irrational distrust of online Poker sites and as such refuse to put real money on them.) Got up to 5,100 after starting with 1500. Lost 2300 on a hand that went like this: Me: AK of hearts. Guy: QQ Pre-flop, heaving betting. Flop A,7,3. Heavy betting. Turn, K. He pushes all in. River, Q. I lose all but 15 on the next hand, wherein I call a guy's all-in bluff on the flop with a pair of aces. He runner-runners a flush. Am currently in 162nd place, with 23,099 in chips and about 1700 people of 10,000 remaining. From 15 fucking chips. Top 250 gain entry in a $1000 freeroll next week. Edit: And the dream is over. 515th place. Not bad, after coming back from 15 chips. Last edited by Etzell; 01-23-2010 at 06:18 AM. |

99.9% of online poker is legit, you are not being scammed, it is not a fix.
if you genuinely enjoy playing poker, deposit $40 to fulltilt. play either $1/$2 one table sngs or 1c/2c cash games. do not surpass these stakes; you will go bust. if you're a losing player, $40 should last a few weeks (about 50-60 one table sngs). however if you're a winning player, you can start building your bankroll from there. once you've got 30ish buyins, move up. DO NOT EXCEED THESE STAKES WITH $40 YOU WILL BUSTO, FACT |

also make sure to get rakeback if you're thinking about taking it seriously.

Maybe psychologicaly? If you go in with 40 bucks initially, you may be less inclined to losing it by gambling poorly, whereas going with with 10 bucks multiple times you may be more reckless?

I've never found online non-cash poker to be realistic. It's fun, but 90% of the people are there to go all in and just get more chips from the cashier when they run out. I've played in a high stakes real-game with some lawyers and it's almost the same thing, they have no concept of money. Regular games with friends, who have the same financial situation, is much more fun, lasts longer, and is based on skill not pushing cash around. Live casino poker is a lot of fun, many people who have no idea what they are doing or how to read you and are broke by the time they figure it or you out. I've never tried fulltilt. I wouldn't mind playing online poker with a bunch of people though, if you guys want to setup a game.

no you are likely to run bad and lose the lot. you need 20buyins at any stake (absolute minimum) to combat the natural variance of the game. besides, most sites offer various first deposit bonuses, it'd be silly to waste! |

See, I called my fear of online poker irrational. I know it's not fixed, but then I take an awful beat and can't believe it.
It's because the hands are played so much faster than they are in real life, you see a higher volume of hands, and thus a higher volume of awful beats. But, while I know that, I don't buy it. Side note, made $90 at the casino the night I did that freeroll. |

You've hit the nail on the head. Higher volume = more sick beats. They happen. Get your money in when you're ahead in high volumes, however, and you are going to see profit. Play position and give the villian shit odds. You'll win more often than you lose.
