Am I the only one in the history of gaming that uses the mousewheel to change weapons?

no, but in fortress games because of the great difference between weapons and the speed with wich you switch eg rocket launcher shot - instant shotgun shot after, you have to have complete and instant control over it. using the mousewheel takes your finger off the shoot button.
