Kbomb you have a point, I'm not sure if they factor things like that in the "1 in X" research they do.
I think you misread

There is worse. Bear...lion...shark...Actually the most dangerous animal is a shark riding on an elephant, just trampling and eating everything they see.

The thing is, the terror from a shark attack comes from not being able to see what is attacking you (or see it coming etc.)

So really the worst would be an elephant riding a shark underwater possibly with some sea snake escourts for flanking.

Hmmnn... Jack never said anything about water or sea monkeys...I think you're mistake as I feel certain Jack would have mentioned it.

Here's another thought:

If you ever fall out of an airplane, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free dummy.

You are more likly to die falling down the stairs then riding a motorcycle too, but its because you you stairs 5+ times a day, and may never even ride a motorcycle...not because stairs are more dangerous then a motorcycle.

With that said I agree with ghost that most of it is a "no control over the situation" type fear. And also its just a plain terrifying way to die, kind of like a shark attack.
What the statistics say is that once you've boarded your 380,000:th
plane you will have had "a" chance of crashing in one of those planes. Once you've climbed a ladder 9,485 times you will have had a chance of falling on your ass and die on one of those climbs.

So in that effect it does makes planes more safer than cars, or that the average car driver is less skilled or more intoxicated than the average pilot

*Edit* fatal outcome fixed

Yup, saw that in the news. Meanwhile a few thousand flights went off without a hitch, and hundreds of thousands died of other causes.
