When is there a series of jokes told by one comedian? It is dialogue, not monologue/stand-up comedy.

"daddy would you like [some] sausage?..."

Probably because the song by itself wasn't very good/funny. The father's reaction to it is what made that scene what it is. The father character really makes all the scenes what they are. Rip Torn is amazing in that role (as he is in almost the same role on The Larry Sanders Show).
