I don't think Steam has the power to keep you from playing a 3rd party mod, which is probably why they said they are keeping the already released version of gmod around as a "demo." You just won't be able to get future versions without paying for it.

I think Valve can pretty much do anything with your Steam account. If they don't want you playing a 3rd party mod, all they have to do is throw in some code/update and bam, you can't play it anymore.

I like the idea of having a central place to list all your games but the lack of customability through Steam kinda makes me feel like they own my copy of the game and I'm just able to play it.

No, but 'tis great for LAN parties. No teleporters or shit like that, I got DoD, Blue Shift, TFC, HL1, OpFor, anda ll of them before Steam had a chance to fuck 'em up.

Meh, after looking up some stuff and thinking I believe this will be a great step for garrys mod.
I mean hell, he has the UNCOMPILED SOURCE ENGINE CODE, he can do whatever he wants now without any limits! Plus, it's only 10 bucks.

i dont think unless you have debt of your own in the form of rent you need to pay, a car loan, food you need to buy, school loans to pay off that you are really qualified to judge someone else for deciding to sell or not. until you feel that pressure you really cant know.

at any rate, it's not like he launched a mod with a clear vision and particular gameplay style and specific goal. he was tinkering and released version 1 as just something that someone might find somewhat fun screwing around with. Valve realized how he developed a toolset to show off source and it was good business for them to get some rights or whatever the particular agreement was.

anyways, people who like this mod/whatever it is should be happy. as stated, he was going to quit furthering gmod. for a lousey 10 bucks you will get a better product with much more potential.

this whole culture over the last 10 years, of pirating music, games, videos, torrents, hacking - whatever it may be, has bred a serious overblown sense of entitlement. you like something? the respect the creator and pay for it.
