Wizardry 8
has anyone played this game it's a crpg. I've been reading up on it so I know how to make a party the right way (6 characters) and it's confusing. But I have to do it correctly, that's the most important part (on any rpg) for the rest of the game.
SOMEBODY HELP ME. I DO NOT KNOW IF BISHOPS CAN USE PORTAL SPELLS OR JUST MAGES, WHAT ALCHEMISTS SHOULD HYBRID TO AT LEVEL 2, OR HOW ANY OF THE REALMS/SCHOOLS/MAGIC BOOKS WORK OR WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM IS. If I was a rogue and then went hybrid to alchemist, would he have the pick locks and traps skills? is that how it works? I can't start playing until I understand these things and can make a party that doesn't turn out stupid by the time the game has been on its way. What does gamefaqs mean when it says wait to level up 6-7 level spells for a bishop. anyway, anyone played this game or have thoughts on it? |

I've since answered my own questions here. In case someone plays the game in the future and comes here.
it's also frustrating when you find a question on a forum you had and no one ever posted the answer even though they said they found it there are 6 realms (air, water, mental, earth, fire, divine) there are 4 magic schools (divinity, psionics, alchemy, wizardry) for the pure caster classes: mages specialize in the magic school divinity alchemists in alchemy priests in divine psionicists in psionics hybrid classes (fe lord, samurai) specialize in one of the magic schools too (divinity and wizardry here), but level spells more slowly to make up for having combat skills bishops are the odd class in that they can learn all the spell schools, so they can be the strongest character but level up slowest (more exp requirements) each spell has a school and realm associated with it. so for example, "holy water" spell is Divinity school (since priest can only learn it) and water realm. so when you keep using the spell, it increases points in the divinity school, and the water realm (not the divine realm like you'd expect -- the school and realm don't have to match but they often do). some spells have more than one school, so more than one class can make use of it. fe cure poison is in the spell book alchemist/priest (or the corresponding schools of alchemy/divinity, same thing). its realm is air. Portal spells can be learned by anyone who can use magic, casters and hybrids included, because its spellbooks are Alchemist, Mage, Priest, Psionic (all 4 corresponding schools of alchemy, wizardry, divinity, and psionics). since bishops can learn all spells you want to save your picks for when you're high enough level to get the highest spell levels, 6 and 7, and get the lower levels from books you can read. when you multiclass, like a rogue turning into a fighter, you'll keep the rogues old skills like pickpocket and locks and traps, whatever level they were, but they can't go up anymore, even with practice. Indeed I think I read it was one of the last games to use dnd rules (came out in 2001) and that's probably true because I don't know any that continued doing that lately, maybe neverwinter nights 2 is the last one? the only other game I played that was dnd based was baldur's gate. From what I can tell they're great for all the types of characters you can make, but everything is based on dice rolls so you either hit a monster or you don't, so when you're low level you miss almost all the time.
