Repairing a HDD
So, as many of you know I have been absent a good bit lately. The reason... my HDD decided it was going to take a shit on me (SORRY NO B2 FOR FF_MAYHEM. THIS IS WHY). I have been using my company laptop and even though it is relatively new, it sucks (even with a quad core cpu and "high def" graphics.... yea right).
Anyway... I took the thing to 2 local shops to see if the data could be rescued and neither one of the places would touch it in fear of losing everything. The platter itself is in perfect condition. But a few things in the drive are toast. so here is my question... If i were to locate and buy a HDD that is exactly the same as the one that decided to croak on me, do you guys have any specific tips or advice for me about swapping the platter from the old, to the new? I have worked on computers since I was a teen. I have repaired many things, but NEVER a HDD. I have found instructions online, but I just want to make damn sure i take every precaution when doing this. I really dont want to ruin the platter... tips PLEASE |

I cannot offer any tips as I have never tried this either. This will be interesting to follow anyway.
In what way is the drive broken?
