2 Drives Died At Same Time

Everything was working fine last night. I shutdown and went to bed. Woke up today and only 1 of 3 drives showed up. My SDD is dead and a 1tb HDD.

I have a drive dock and they're not showing up on the laptop.

WTF is this shit?

Not 100% sure if your problem is the same as mine, but doesn't hurt to try, as it sounds similar...

My WD Elements 1TB external HDD "died" a few times now and it turns out that everytime, the drive was perfectly fine, but Windows somehow lost it. And like you, it would always happen after a restart or something and the drive would be missing or windows would find the drive but think of it as empty and needing formatting.

Either way, it ended up happening because the MFT / boot sector of the drive somehow got corrupted and now Windows can't read it. All the files were still there and recoverable, but no matter what I did to try to repair the MFT or bootsector, Windows wouldn't read it. After recovering the files I wanted, I just reformatted the drive fresh and it was working perfectly fine again.

Edit:
To recover files, I used this: TestDisk.

It also has an option to try to fix the MFT/bootsector by using the backup MFT/bootsector, but if both are corrupted/damaged then you have to reformat.

Western Digital used to be my go to....but in recent years that view has changed. To have two drives fail like that I'd be very suspicious of a common component. Were these by any chance on the same power chain from the power supply?

Strangeness

I've jumped on an old laptop HDD for the time being. The SSD is dead. Well, it isn't showing up in my dock on my system or laptops.

Oddly the 1tb HDD is working again. It wasn't showing up in the doc at first but then did when I turned it off/on a few times. Seems fine atm. Don't know what is going on there.

The SSD is under warranty so I'll see that it gets replaced.

Confused...........
edit: No, they wasn't on the same power chain. Thanks for the responses.

Ugh...ssd. I missed that in your first post. I thought you deliberately wrote sdd to mean something like second disk drive. Yeah...so the key with ssd is backup as you should assume you will get zero warning of failure and little chance to recover.

Still two drives would make me suspicious of a power supply that's going to attack your wallet....

I normally have a backup but since I moved to 8 I had not got round to setting up Win backup. Luckily all I've lost is what was on my desktop.

Although the HDD seems to be working again just fine (I have put it back in my system and have rebooted twice), that has scared and confused me now.

edit: If you are interested the SSD is:

If you weren't aware of the failure behavior of SSD before hopefully you are now. Frankly I am still avoiding SSD where I can as I still view it as not nearly as reliable as platter based drives....perhaps in the next generation they'll fix that.

I have a work laptop using SSD on which I keep no unique files. Everything is either on a share or backed up on an encrypted USB drive. Hasn't failed in the last year but I always treat it as living on borrowed time!

I'm aware of the failure rate history. It also was damn cheap, although it was on sale. £29.99. The old "you get what you pay for" quote may come into play.

However, I'm not on crack. One of my HDDs did stop from showing up and didn't work in the dock at first.

It's all big ""......... and To Be Continued....

Thanks for the input.

what you use them for is to store your operating system because the more you save to the ssd the faster it wears out. and they don't like saving stuff it decreases there life span dramatically.

atleast that what ive heard. its flash memory so like a flash drive basically. only a whole bunch of em.

Tip: don't buy SSDs on a whim just because it's going cheap like I did. Also, avoid OCZ value (or all?) drives.

I trusted OCZ enough without having to research before purchasing, because I have had RAM and a power supply from them in the past that I have been happy with.

I received a newer model from them as mine was out of sock during the RMA process. It died within 2hrs... I doubt it is my system as I've had 5x 1tb mixed branded drives for over 2 years that are all fine.

Samsung or Intel in future.
