anyone have FF running on linux?
So I've transitioned over to linux completely except for FF.
Does anyone have FF running on ubuntu or any other distro? I'm able to run steam just fine using wine on Linux Mint 14, I can play HL2 and a few other games that i've tried but FF just crashes/quits after you see the med on the main screen. Thanks! |

Not sure I've seen anyone say they've had success in the past.

It used to work fine with 2.0. You have to delete a certain font file though. See info on the wine appdb page.
Last time I tried FF under Wine, I was able to join a game, but it would always crash shortly after spawning. It may be related to my hardware/drivers, but my guess is it's a software problem. |

I'm a linux n00b myself actually but so far I've been able to find solutions for any issues that I've encountered so I will definitely have a look at what you've pointed me to moose.
I'm still hoping someone has got this going already. I've been playing Xonotic instead these days, which is great fun but nothing can replace TFC/FF for me. |

It will crash on load unless you have the font buckshot is referring to.
Install the binary driver from whoever makes your video card, noveau is useless for games. Most distros will have it in their repositories, IIRC in Ubuntu/mint you need to add the restricted branch of the main repository to /etc/apt/sources.list, just add "restricted" after the line that has "main" written after the url. Then "apt-cache search nvidia-" (or whatever the ati driver is called) to find the name of the package and "sudo apt-get install packagenamehere" the latest one that says something about being a binary driver in the description. If all else fails I know nvidia has a nifty installer that will configure, build, and install the driver automatically if you have the correct build tools installed. However this requires about a gig of build tools and may or may not work correctly. You might consider installing native directx9 with winetricks; performance in source games is slightly better. If you decide to get the latest build of wine directly from winehq run steam with the -no-dwrite option or you will have strange font related issues. |
