You can use model viewer to see how long an animation is. Go to the sequences tab and at the very bottom of the screen you will see a slider showing how many frames there are in the animation that's currently selected.
You're added to my friends list. I will give you source files for any model you want to work with, but I don't really want to dump all of them. Again, I don't know why Maya wouldn't be able to open an animation. Try some SDK forums (steampowered or interlopers, maybe) to see if anyone can help. |

I was thinking of creating a simple 2d jump and run (similar to mario bros).
what languages/programes would you recommend guys?

If you want to understand programming theory, then I recommend starting with a high-level language like Python. Starting with something like C or C++ is pretty much going to be a giant turn-off.
