Running steam on an external Hard Drive
Does anyone know if it's possible to run steam off of an external HD? I bought this(click), b/c I needed something to free up the drive on my desktop and I wanted to be able to transfer stuff easily from school computers, to my laptop, and pc.
Which got me thinking...I rarely have time anymore to map b/c I'm away from my desktop and hammer and all my maps are here, and my steam folder is 20+ GB so I don't want to copy all of that over in triplicate either. So I'm considering putting steam onto the external HD. But I'm not sure if it'll work or not. So I figured can't hurt to ask around a bit first.

I used to run TFC off a thumb drive. The main issues is slow load and update times. Also keep in mind that running a program of a HDD does require heavy usage of the HDD.

It will work; some friends of mine ran games off their externals on their laptops. Though, like Mooga said, you'll get alot of usage out of the HDD.
(I also used to run Steam / TFC off a flash/thumb drive). |

I only mention the heavy use because I know a guy who many years back blew out 2 or 3 iPods by running knoppix off them... iPods weren't made to handle the heavy read/write and the drives would overheat and burn out.

yeah, makes since...I would assume this thing is capable of that to a degree, but am concerned about the slowdown. If I do this, this would be what I play FF off of, and I"m not sure if I want to deal with a slowdown the few hours a week I manage to actually get to play.
