Hard Drive Detection.
Prologue: I got this hard drive that had Windows Millenium on it, so I decided to connect and reformat that sucka. It worked, and then I thought "Well, if I can do that, then chances are that I can connect any other hard drive onto this computer and even scan for viruses and such".
Story: My friend's PC managed to go FUBAR status, it's got some seriously bad stuff that won't even let me connect a USB drive to install some computer cleaners into it on Safe Mode/Networking. So I decided to be lazy and take his hard drive, then connect it to my computer and have mine scan it as if it's an extension of my own computer. Unlike that Windows Millenium hard drive that I reformatted without a problem on my machine (detected it, yes), this one refuses to show up on My Computer after connecting it. Not sure what the volume is, but it's got Windows XP on it and I already tried the Slave setting. Computer Management won't display it either. Bottom lines: So I need some help on making my machine see this hard drive so I can finally scan and fix it. Last edited by Focksbot; 10-24-2009 at 05:49 PM. Reason: GIVE ME SOME MONEY. |

Did you check the bios settings?
Sometimes detection of these drives is not always turned on. |

I checked the BIOS, it's all on AUTO but it still can't recognize the hard drive... and for some reason it won't even recognize my secondary hard drive that has all my music and video editing software now.

Don't forget to check the jumpers on the drive itself as well. Make sure those are set to auto and not master/slave.

Set one drive jumper to master - and connect it to the end of the cable Set one drive jumper to slave - and connect it to the middle of the ribbon. Last edited by ~kev~; 10-27-2009 at 03:06 PM. |

Focksbot, give us an update, where do you stand?
Your bios sounds to be set up correctly, seeing as it has already detected one drive. What OS is your friend running? What OS are you running on your box? The OS may not be detecting the drive due to a filing system incompatibility. Steps: As pixel suggested check in your bios to see if the device is showing up there. If not, proceed to kev's suggestion. If so, drop it into a USB enclosure and see if it will read then. If that fails, and it is detected from bios, then the best bet is to reformat the drive and install windows from a windows disk. |

Write "diskmgmt.msc" on the run and check the hdd's. Probably u ll see the hdd u were lookin for. if u wont see it then there is a problem u can do some operations with right click on that hdd at diskmgmt and make it appears.

Okay upon further investigation, here's what I've discovered:
First off, my ribbon has these things on it: 1. CD Drive. 2. C: Drive (+ backup partition). 3. Alternate internal hard drive for storage, 250GB. When I disconnect 1, then 3 doesn't work. When I connect it again, then 3 is detected. Taking this into account, I'm thinking that I should set his jumper settings to the same as my number 3 is (I think auto), then it will be detected. But I can't disconnect 1 or else it will turn invisible. I really have no use for 1 anyway, so it's a bit of a nuisance. I'd like to be able to replace 1 with his hard drive, then 2 remains the same, and 3 remains the same. |
