FF 2.3 under ubuntu intrepid w/ wine 1.01: anyone been able to pull this off?
I've gotten all my steam games to run reasonably well under Intrepid with wine other than FF
I get to the splash screen before the game crashes after "loading" for several seconds. Is this some problem I'm having or has anyone else been able to get 2.3 going under linux? |

Try to install latest Wine release from official wine repositories, the one from ubuntu repositories is really old (1.1.15 vs. 1.01.) |

Heh.
I get all the way to the team select screen now using the wine repository version, and crash with a "Pure Virtual Function call" error. What settings/launch options are you using shadow? Mine are -dxlevel 80 -heapsize 1024000 -width 1024 -height 768. Still pretty impressive IMO, considering the last time I used wine you'd probably be laughed at if you asked how to play directx games. Here I am now playing hl2 and tf2 with reasonable frames. |

Yeah, I'm using the latest binary drivers from nvidia. I didnt have my heart set on getting it to work, just wanted to give it a try since I heard buckshot got it working. I'm amazed I got as far as getting a playable hl2 and tf2.
I've tried nexiuz, its kinda fun and reminds me of the quake 1 days (which I was never part of, aside from trying all the 3rd party clients with updated graphics, which is kinda what nexuiz is anyway). Funny thing is, I actually get considerably better fps in gl games like Q3 arena and tfc even when theyr'e running under wine. I think tfc said 999 fps at one point . it' just directx that seems to have some issues. Hopefully support will mature in the near future. |

Mine works sort of under wine. I haven't tried it until today (because of this thread). I was playing for a bit under dx80 level. But for some reason when i put the resolution up to 1280x1024 it crashes every time I try to be a demoman. o_O

It's strange. I can play as a sniper fine... but it doesn't appear as I can play as anything else without the game crashing. Maybe it doesn't like class switching; although it still crashed when I chose demoman to start with. Very odd.

yeah, it works at 800x600, albeit poor frames considering my video card (9800gx2). If I up the resolution I start getting all sorts of errors. Strange as it works great in hl2.
How about a gl version of hl2 valve? Or someone steal the damn directx spec so the wine devs dont have to spend all day hacking directx |

You are using the latest stable(ish) version of wine right?
I can play FF fine in 1280x1024, excluding the aforementioned "only play as sniper" issue. Also make sure you're in DirectX 8 and have the restricted nVidia linux drivers. Make sure you have the 173 ones. I think you can download it with envyNG. sudo apt-get install envy-ng or something like that. |

So I've done some more testng and it appears the crashing is more related to when:
1. I switch classes 2. I pick up some ammo in the spawn, discard it, and then try to pick up another bag. Those are the reproducible crashes I've found. It gives an error about threadtools.h having a failed assertion with (size_t)p % 4 == 0. The only thing related I was able to find is http://forums.srcds.com/viewtopic/10104. It's about some guy getting that error when running a Gary's Mod server but it doesn't have any solutions unfortunately. |

I'm using an 8800 GTS or GTX. That may be the problem.

I'm able to get in-game running under the latest release of wine after deletion of the said font files. Anyone know why you need to delete said files? What's causing ff to crash because of said files? How to fix it?
Furthermore, while I'm able to get in-game I cannot get much further. Playing sniper is fine but if I change to any other class, ff will crash and fail horribly. I've heard this isn't an isolated incident either. Any suggestions? |

The crashes happen when you pick up ammo bags, or when you spawn with modified ammo. It crashes with some memory error. As for Mervaka: Are you using good video drivers (i.e. not the ghetto open source ones)? |
