Random system freezes? (Vista)
My system has been randomly freezing durring use. Once as I exited a game, and once when I was IMing someone (I was highlighting text when it crashed).
Any ideas? Or is this just "vista sucks" issues? |

The information you present is a bit vague to be quite honest.
Can you give us more information? What exactly does your computer do? Does it respond after awhile? Do you have to turn it off and turn it back on? Any sort of error messages or anything? For example, my computer will randomly crash (not freeze, crash) without warning, it's not a BSOD either; screen just goes black and power supply has to be turned off and back on just to get it to run again. |

Please post system specs and Application/Security/System Event Logs from the times before and after your crash/freeze.

Sorry for being vauge, I wasn't sure even where to start.
What happens is that everything freezes. The screens freeze (No errors, No BSoD) and it doesn't respond to any keyboard or mouse commands. The screen it stuck, no change. Sound also gets sucks I think... I don't remember if it looped or was stuck in a note. -=Specs=- CASE: Antec Nine Hundred MOBO: EVGA NVIDIA nForce 750i FTW CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5GHz HEAT SINK: ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB DDR2 1066 GPU: XFX GeForce 9800 GTX Black Edition 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB 7200 RPM HDD: HITACHI 1TB 7200 RPM DVD: Samsung DVD Burner PSU: ZALMAN ZM750-HP Continuous 750W ATX12V OS: Windows Vista Business x64 SP 1 MAIN SCREEN: Dell 1704FPV @ 1280 x 1024 SECONDARY SCREEN: HP L1530 @ 1024 x 768 MOUSE: Logitech G5 SE KEYBOARD: Random PS2 Microsoft Keyboard MIC: Logitech USB Desktop Microphone WEBCAM: Microsft LifeCam VX-5000 SPEAKERS: Bose Companion 2 -=Logs=- SYSTEM: Code:

It happened again.
I was watching a video on comedycentral.com. The stuff on my other screen started gliphing before the crash. The sound continued for a few second after the screen froze. GPU issue? I was having this while trying to play L4D when I had 64-bit XP. |

are you running any monitoring apps?
also you should try uninstalling your video drivers and sound drivers and reinstall them, even chipset drivers. |

I could be crazy, but couldn't the difference in resolution amongst the two monitors cause some issues amongst display? It is afterall rendering two separate monitors at different resolutions...

No, you really only notice issues with that when you are doing full screen app stuff.

I think you need to start with the basics:
memtest86 hard drive diagnostics check key temps Motherboard BIOS current? Establish that the hardware is fundamentally sound. Next, lock the performance of your GPU so that it is not allowing the application to decide between Performance and Quality. Lock it at Performance. Next, any PATA devices? If so, which? Any front panel USB devices? Can you disconnect their jumper cables from the motherboard for the time being? See if you can establish stability. |

What should I use to test temps?
Also, it crashes and glitches without any major aps running. Recently it hasn't froze. Rather the graphics start to glitch of "freak out." Windows will disappear and stuff. To I restart the system and it works find. |

Well, at the very least you can use the temp monitor in the BIOS to see what the CPU is doing. You can also use SIW to monitor temps however that info is neither persistent nor logged so you'll have to pay attention to it.

To test temps, grab speedfan or ntuner, since you are using a nvidia chipset and nvidia gpu.

It ended up it WAS the GPU. I've RMA'd the card and I'm using a spair card that was lent to me. Not a single crash or issues yet. Hopfully the replacment card will work fine

I would say it's because you're running 64 bit Vista. I tried Vista Ultimate 64 bit for about 7 days until it died. Prior to that I had tried XP Pro 64 bit for about a month until it died.
I don't think Windows is ready for 64 bit... which is why I run Ubuntu 64 bit (as there's no way in hell I'm going to give up my 8 gigs of ram to run a 32 bit OS). My advice - if you really want to use 64 bit Windows - is to use a program like Acronis True Image to make an image of your hard drive right after you install Vista and all the programs you need and then inevitably when it starts to fuck up spend a day re-imaging your hard drive from the existing image you made. Repeat as necessary until Windows 7 comes out and you can give it a try; maybe it'll be more stable.
