texturing help!!

ok, i need some stuff:

1. how to add detail props to surfaces? (now i'm adding them with prop_detail in hammer, wich is very stupid
2. how to make good looking bumbmaps? (they don't work very good if i make them with the nvidia texture tool :s)
3. has enyone got some good desert rocks and sand (i have some for the moment, but everyone is complaining about them becouse they are from counter-strike source :s)
