My 7800 GS Doesn't Support HDR?

Thrilled of the new patch, I decided to go onto monkey and check out the beauty of the HDR I've seen in a video.

There was none.

I was baffled and went to my video settings in-game to find it on "None." (Yet the recommended setting was full HDR.) So I switch it back on, leave the game, and reentered the map.

HDR wasn't present.

I go back to the settings and it was still on. Maybe I have to restart the game, I thought. So I did. I reloaded the map to find no HDR still. I went back to my settings to find that the game itself changed it back to "None" on startup. I was rather annoyed...

I loaded up Lost Coast to see if this happened on more than just Fortress Forever. It turns out that the HDR setting was not effective; there was no HDR.

The NVIDIA settings have graphics settings configured to where the 3D application decides. I have the latest drivers for my video card (175.19). I don't have any older drives, since I already nuked them and downloaded 175.19 afterwards.

Is it that my video card is dying and cannot support it anymore? Every now and then I see wireframe instead of a certain texture in Half-Life 2 Deathmatch.

Basic Specs:

NVIDIA 7800 GS 256 RAM
Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz
2 GB Ram
Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP3

Any suggestions?

First thing I would check, is do you have Anti-Aliasing turned on?
In the past you weren't able to have both AA and HDR turned on at the same time, but I thought that it was no longer an issue. It's possible that it's actually partly a hardware issue I suppose.

Do you have any -dxlevel settings on your command line?

Yeah... it won't work if you force your DirectX version lower than 9 as well.

Hardware & software are configured at "-dxlevel 90" on startup. That wasn't the problem. But I did find out, like BoltR said, I can only have either AA or HDR on. When I turned AA off, HDR faded in. Then, when I turned AA back on, the HDR faded away. Very odd indeed. Well, I guess I gotta give up one or the other.

Yeah, not sure the exact reason behind that. Only that ATI first added support for both at the same time in Oblivion when they released specially hacked drivers just to do it in that game...

well maybe it optimized it, but ATI has supported it ever since the x1000 series of cards. That said, the source engine is about the only game that CAN have hdr AND aa on Nvidia 7000 series (I have a 7950). I have no idea why yours is different, but maybe the GS version had something crippled on it.

For what it's worth, in about 90% of the games I've seen HDR is overdone anyway, I leave it off. Check out anticitizen in the preview video if you think otherwise for FF.

Yes, it was a hack to get it working on the x1000

The funny thing is that I was able to use both with my old 6600 GT.

Take -dxlevel out of your command line if it's still there.

I took it out earlier today. Would that effect anything?

It'll reset most of your graphics options when you start the game up.

I am bumping this to inform about how I have fixed this problem. Like I've been thinking this whole time, my video card does support HDR and AA at the same time. Simply, instead of adding -dxlevel 90 to my launch options, I changed it to -dxlevel 95 and it fixed it. I can finally see the sexiness of FF_Monkey with HDR while having my AA.

Can now be locked.

I think it was because I exec-ed that configuration that really helps with your fps, and it messed up all my graphic settings.
