Building a Server?
i've googled several different times and all i seem to come up with is renting servers. I'm curious as to how to build one, what do i need, and what dont i need, and any other basic information you can share.
Note: i've built 3 computers already, so that aspect of it is not new to me. recommended parts for FF? ANY information you can provide will be much appreciated.

Well idk if this will help you b/c it's more about setting up your server after you have it, but here's a nice wiki article me and zip put together.
I'll see what else I can find for you in a bit. EDIT: This might help you: http://supportwiki.steampowered.com/...dicated_Server

One question would be if you would have enough bandwidth for something like this. Would you be getting a second internet connection just for it or using the one you have currently? I'm fairly certain you need a connection that's got both high up and download speeds, and getting a connection with high upload speeds (for whatever reason) is a bit more expensive than just getting a connection with equal download speeds.
If you've got great upload then there isn't much worry, but that'd be the first thing I'd look into cost wise.

Routing is also a concern. You can have great up/down specs, but if a lot of people have to go through a whole bunch of hops to get to your server, their latency could be fairly high.

What connection are you going to use? i can only see this being worth your wild if you had like fiber optic or T3, i would not recoment cable, its not stable enough for hosting IMO. Now high high dsl speed might work too but that also wont be cheap. But then again you just want it for maybe like a 12 ppl server im asuming since you said you wanted this basicly to test things like maps or maybe even beta test 2.0 for example with other testers.

yes i have dsl, and am considering getting the server its own line. i'm considering it being only like 10 ppl or so, like i said this will be just to test maps that i'm making from the "map request" thread that are in beta. instead of releasing beta version after beta version i can just keep them on my server and update as soon as i change/fix something in the map.
i'm going to be concentrating on making maps from that thread for the community, this will be the place where y'all can check on progress of maps. i may even set up a website for you to post ideas/suggestions/bugs and what not about the maps on the server. also, this is not a sure thing, but i am strongly considering it.

Hardware wise for SOURCE game servers (NOT ORANGE BOX):
Very good processor(s). A gig of ram. (according to the head guy of srcds, he has run about 5 or 6 CS:S servers and a few other random ones with only a gig or ram) Fast Hard Drive(s). (tends to help) Check out srcds for more information. It's an AMAZING site for info on srcds (Source Dedicated Server). |

Gambit a private 10 slot server would cost you about 10 bucks a month and you could just post the password in the forums. Then you have good upload and download speeds most of the time. This would be considerably cheaper But as far as specs go for a home standalone server pm 417.
edit: here's the link for the guy above me. http://www.srcds.com/

yea, Zip and i talked last night, and i think i'll just get a private server.
i looked at the cost, and for a 16 slot private server it'll be like 162 a year(if i pay for the entire year up front) thats a hell of alot cheaper than i thought a server would be. i'm just going to do that and post the password here for everybody. thanks y'all.

Keep in mind most ISPs have an "anti-server" clause where you are not allowed to run a server on your connection. Mind you, doing stuff like transferring a file over AIM also counts as running a server, so they wouldn't just shut you down if they found out.
However, if you end up using most (or all) of your bandwidth allotment, they would use "running a server" as an excuse to shut off your connection. Safest way to do this would be to get a seperate line from a company that has no problem with using all of your bandwidth to run a server. Look at business-oriented ISPs for that sort of stuff. Make sure to read this as well. While Optimum Online is most notorius for this, nearly every ISP does it in some form.
