Use dx7 and have no disortion effects, visibible cloaked spies and through-door vision.

pretty much everything you said is true, except visible spies. they are much harder to see in DX7 mode, because it has no distortion/shimmer effect, so its just a see-thru texture, which is very hard to see. And see-thru doors is only partly true. the doors disappear, but all you see is the skybox, not whats actually beyond the door.

Using DX7 and certain commands you can make Spies appear pitch-black. I believe that's fixed in the new patch though.

it's been fixed. and using DX8 and above and certain commands made spies appear pitch-black, because of commands that prevent shaders from rendering, and source doesnt know enough to just replace it with the DX7 texture, it makes them black. It's been fixed since 1.1.
