Microsoft to neuter the Vista killswitch?

It's supposedly "leaked info" but it is an interesting change if it turns out to be true.

Just a zdnet blog...but...

Quote:
When SP1 ships sometime in early 2008, it will strip away one of Vista’s most annoying features and remove one of the most persistent objections to Vista’s adoption. Microsoft plans to remove the infamous “kill switch” from Windows Vista when SP1 is installed, restoring the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program to its original role as a series of persistent but nonlethal notifications.
Quote:
Microsoft says the new notifications will lead to online “get legal” offers comparable to those for XP:

* Windows Vista Home Basic, $89
* Windows Vista Home Premium, $119
* Windows Vista Business, $145
* Windows Vista Ultimate, $199

Ironically, those prices are significantly better than the retail prices that you’ll find from legitimate Windows resellers. In theory, at least, a consumer could install a copy of Windows Vista without a product key, refuse to activate the system for 30 days, and then purchase a perfectly legal license at a discount using Microsoft’s online offer.
Freakin Microsoft...glad I only paid $25.00 for my copy of Ultimate....

And? I've obtained it legitimately and have full rights to what it offers. I'm in no danger of loss of anything due to a patch in the future detecting some method of piracy. $25.00 is a small price to pay to stay legit.

Ha ha ha...I used to work for a company that did survey's with people (yes at home the annoying assholes) but I worked for the corporate side so I called businesses.

MS was / is one of their clients and I did the interviews with the CEO's and CI/T O's about the "Genuine Advantage" and the kill switch and all that shit. Hilarious some of the responses you get from a CIO when you ask him how many copies of pirated software he has on his computer!

Also there is a lot more to that shit then you think...I cringed when I had to dl it to update some shit on my computer...tried to find ways around it but it wouldn't let me so I ultimately had to dl it, but I promise you it does more then you think.

If you have Novell Netware running with XP clients, you'll see some IP's that keep getting hit. A check of those IP's shows that they are registered to Microsoft. So even going back to old XP version, MS operating systems have been "calling home" on a regular basis with some sort of info/stats.

I noticed that when I enabled bidirectional mode on the firewall I built at my office.

Vista is just a damned abomination.

Beyond the security settings locking down ANY workplace usefulness, there is other shit too.

For example, wireless connectivity sucks ass. If you look at the available networks and see none, it's probably because you have Vista set to look at "All Networks" instead of "Wireless Networks".

That's right, "All Networks" somehow does not include "wireless networks".

Who came up with that concept? I want to shank them in the neck.

If you don't activate your copy of Vista within the alloted time or if at any time your copy of Vista decides that it is not a legitimate copy the "Windows Genuine Advantage" operations in Vista will switch Vista into a "Reduced Functionality Mode". That is to say Vista will no longer do anything you want it to do.

From what I understood, it's the feature that cripples unregistered versions of Windows Vista.
EDIT: Ah, Innoc beat me to it.
