I'll never solve the nv4.dll loop / freeze
Vid:NVIDIA GeForce 7800 - most recent/recommended driver from evga 94.24 forceware Mobo: GA-K8N-SLi Greetings, Oh this is getting annoying. I'd love to be beta testing away but i cant. Anything HL2 related - from HL2 to episode 1 and FF either gives me the nv4.dll loop error and subsequent bsod, or it just constantly freezes for 15 secs, releases for 10 secs then repeates over and over. I have used the valve troubleshooter over and over. I'm apparently all up to date - mobo wise, vid card wise, and theres no more recent bios updates. I tried the -nosound thing and -nowindow as well, but that didnt change anything - it's gotta be graphics related as i'm getting artifacts and tears in the worlds as well. I really don't know what else to try sans a clean install of xp, which i'd really like to avoid. Any help would be most appreciated. Any info you need I will supply. Thanks, pc |

Try your videocard in another system and try another videocard in your system. That way you might be able to isolate the problem.

Hey Puppychow. I have a Geforce 7800 GT (BFG Brand). I kinda had the same issues as you. I would get terrible artifacts, and after about 15-30 minutes of play, the screen would go black, and I'd have to restart.
I eventually found out that my card's fan wasn't cranking up the speed to 100% during games and such. I ended up using the Riva Tuner tool to force it to run at 100% all the time. That really helped out, but shit still wasn't running as well as it should be. I guessed that my card overheated so much that it messed up the gpu. So I RMA'd and BFG send me a brand new one. Everything is workin' great now. I have read that this issue seems to happen a lot on 7800's, so maybe that's your problem. |

I would recomend checking your video card and game settings to make sure you don't have anythign set to a point it shouldn't. Even setting things too low can effect performance if your video card dosen't like it. Worse case: set your video card to just let the program do the picking. I found that turn up settings on my video card actualy made the game look better AND run better. Crazy stuff.

Don't use the "eVGA" recommended drivers or whatever, I would try the latest full release available on nVidia's website.
Beyond that, check the fan/gpu temp as was mentioned and check the video memory temp/stability. The error you're getting could be hardware related, though it is just as likely a software/driver error. Can you reproduce it in other 3d apps? |
