I read an interesting article a few months back about using a massive railgun on the moon to lauch space ships farther into space than we can from Earth.

The ratio of propelling force to the distance of the launching mechanism would possibly crush astronauts though...

They're talking about that in the context of small, low mass unmanned probes and such.

Or less power applied to a manned ship. It'd still save on fuel even if it wasn't shooting as hard as it could.
