I was tempted to spell it "axe" actually. Out loud they may sound the same but when written down they seem totally different, and when I hear it spoken, what I visualize in my mind is an axe.
Since I only ever see this word spoken like this on TV I don't actually have the opportunity to ask someone, I know who pronounces it "axe", how they would personally spell the word.
