Something that can more people play Fortress Forever
Something I found while surfing the web:
http://planethalflife.gamespy.com/Vi...s.Detail&id=20 This article talks about the mistakes a mod team could make. I think the developers made mistake No. 3. Lack of Marketing Awareness and Rationale The mod isn't featured very often on YouTube and other websites. And that's why FF isn't well known outside of the forum. There is a solution though, a YouTuber can make a gameplay on FF(no, not some random YouTuber, I meant a YouTube star in the gaming section, like Niitch, SeaNanners and some others), if successful, more people will check out FF and more people might play it! And some similar happened to a mod called Suicide Surivival, SeaNanners posted a video about it and it made the mod's popularity skyrocket into the Popular Mod listing on Moddb. This is a serious matter, up to now, I've only played in a populated server once, and it was a server with only 4-6 people. I know I know, the server gets busy around 5pm EST, but by that time, it's 6am here! I can't possibly wake up at 6 just to play FF! So here's what I have to say about the low player problem in FF, I hope the dev team can take it into some consideration.

The problem is we can't just make a youtuber play FF. And a lot of them don't take requests or suggestions really. Sea nanners has also been playing hidden source, and while I haven't checked, I kind of doubt if it's really done much for the game. While we would deffinately see results from something like that, I don't think it'd be very much.
Another problem is that most of the cool stuff in FF is hidden behind a door of practice and experience. A popular youtuber, brand new to this game could very likely do very poorly without conveying all the neat tricks and mechanics. Which would make the game look pretty bad. Games like the hidden with in-your-face clear gimicks are much easier to just hop onto and start having fun, which is what most youtubers are looking for. They need to entertain an audience, and the quicker and easier it is to have fun the better that can do it. I guess the point is that FF is a pretty serious and deep, niche game. Not particularly the thing youtubers are looking for. But it would be very helpful, I'll give you that. We would definately see a lot of new players. And while I don't think it'd last very long, it'd certainly be wonderful while it lasted. So the main obsticle is how to get someone like that to play this game.

i don't think any one youtuber is gonna fix the problem. basically what i would of said was what FDA said so i leave it to him.
however that doesn't mean i think its hopeless but putting all your eggs in one basket is. tbh I've been planning to make a youtube video featuring FF. but im lazy and haven't made time to put it together also i need more footage but i also need to figure out how to access recorded matches.

Agree with op post about initial lack of awareness, but a few youtube vids or ads wont solve a problem that can't be fixed....
When I started TFC, I was 1. a kid with too much time in his hands and 2. there was not much choice of online FPS' that I could play...it was either TFC, CS or Quake, dont even think UT was out yet. Now theres at least 15 other choices, across different platforms, all much more easily accessible and easier to play. Some kid now tries FF, will say wtf is going on and go to COD. Even the likes of CS GO imo is a failure in terms of bringing the numbers, its just that it already had a massive community of CS players behind it that that came across to keep that alive. I don't even see that many new players coming into CS GO! For FF...the numbers were already declining in TFC when FF came out (I stopped playing just before that stage and went to CS), and in terms of clans.....UE, SHS, KosM was gone way before, BC and DW just dissolved (but most members reformed) I cant say for certain what the NA community was like but I can bet it was declining too. Too few people picked up on FF as a result and yes lack of awareness played a part to that.....(kudos to the devs tho for doing something like this in their time for free!) If by some miracle a dev with too much time in his hands might commit to remaking FF (ala TFC2), with updated graphics and gameplay and give it exposure, so that all the oldskools would think "hey, i'd give this a go, even just casually, as I had fold memories" (I certainly would, for old times sake), it might work. Probably not tho, but I can dream... Just an old TFCer ranting |

It does help, actually. Totaliscuit for example brings some people to games. A lot of reviewers advertise games they like aswell. For example, brutalmoose, peanutbuttergamer, jontron, projared and evne egoraptor all advertised chivalry:medieval warfare because they thought it was awesome.
Not only that, you'd be surprised at the amount of people actually want to play an old school shooter again. It's just that either they think this game is a rip off of TF2 or TFC, they don't know the game exists(because of lack of advertisement), or they see that nobody is playing and immediately uninstall. But I think there are enough people that would play a game like this, but right now, even Zandronum and Zdaemon, 2 doom sourceports, have way more players playing each day. Most old school fps might have low playercounts, but at least I can find a game most of the time. In FF, that´s not the case. I guess that one problem is, the people interested in these types of games are ususally adults and young adults, because these type of games are old, it's a pretty dead genre. However, teenagers( like me) have a lot of free time on their hands to play multiplayer games, and that would keep the playercounts up. I guess it's harder to get teenagers into this game, especially the mainstream ones who only care about graphics and don't want to try something different. But hey, TF2 is very popular with my age group and many that aren't stupid as fuck actually do want to know what older team fortress games were like, or try something different. Only the very latest Source SDK supports Linux, and FF is behind that by 2 (3?) versions and it would require a lot of porting work. FF might work under Wine, but last time I tried it, it would simply crash after awhile. Never bothered to dive into why.

Please fix the hanging steam validation and hl2.exe crashes. Whenever I feel like playing it ends up crashing or doesn't launch at all and just hangs on the validating files window so I just play tfc or tf2 instead. I've also been getting huge fps spikes since the 2.46 update which makes it unplayable.

You can't just say 'other Steam games' because the quality of those other Steam games varies wildly like a bitch. You have good games, good games with a few bugs (dammit XCOM: EU, I got really pissed at the couple of spelling mistakes in the last mission), and horrible games which are only on Steam because whoever Valve employs to decide who uses Greenlight and who is forwarded straight to Steam is a complete fucking retard.
Anyway, chicken, all Source games have random crashes all the fcking time though, and your comment about validating files doesn't make sense to me... You either mean you get disconnected from a server due to Steam validation failure, which happens about once a decade to people and is easy to fix, or that Steam comes up and says it needs to validate files when you try to play the game, which shouldn't happen in the first place because Fortress Forever is a mod, meaning it doesn't use .GCF files and CAN'T be validated. I've never heard of FPS spikes, but my PC is kinda good, and I always have 200 - 300 FPS. Anyway, Engineer is a team dependent class based on his own attributes throughout every Fortress game. His main damage dealer is a static turret that is susceptible to longer range attacks, and can also be strafed around to dodge. If you think about it, most defensive classes ARE. HWGuy needs to be able to get to his killing spot as fast as possible, and is slow and susceptible to backstabs when firing his AC, Demoman is quite weak, and relies on people to keep him alive while he sets up pipes and detonates them. Soldier is the least team dependent, as he is the fastest defensive class when used well, the quickest killer when used well, but that's the thing, "used well". Oh, and Sniper and Pyro are just ignorant pricks and no-one gives a fcking shit. Also, I assume dependent is American, prolly? And therefore dependant is British. Because Chrome doesn't say either are wrong spellings. CONFUSING. I prefer dependent, though. Dependant seems like it would be de-pendant, which would be removing a pendant from someone. Well, I just brought the English language into a forum on the internet to do with video games. Bye bye.

Well I have just sent an e-mail to the FF staff telling then I'm willing to donate time and effort if it needs to be done to take FF to a better position. It also stated how I feel about the current status of FF and TFC.
Who would volunteer to help FF shine again? Regardless of what skills will be needed, that could be arranged afterwards. (Game movies or clips, tutorials, models, ideas, newbie coaching, league organizing, mapping, coding) 1 .- DarK.TaO 2 .- |
