Good 360 controller for fighting games?
So I own a Leet 360. The 360 D-pad is a piece of shit. I miss the greatness of the NES or even the PS2/PS3 D-Pad.
I'm very looking forward to Street Fighter 4 as well as BlazBlue and some other fighting games and I'd like not to use the crappy 360 pads. I'd like to have four controllers anyway so buying 2 XBOX 360 controllers with good D-pads on them is not a waste of money. (It's also cheaper than buying a PS3. d: ) So basically what I'm looking for:
Hearing personal experience from ya'll would be nice, too... like, if you've been using one for 6 months that would be way more helpful than "HAY I SAW THIS ON AMAZON". Thanks guys!

Both the PS3 and the 360 pads have useless D-Pad's. The lack of a quality D-Pad has been a regular thing with consoles since the Saturn, which was the last console to have a good D-Pad.
If you own a PS3 it's possible to buy a USB Saturn controller which will give you the full six buttons on the front (another thing the recent generation of consoles have sucked on) as well as the legendary D-Pad. For both consoles it's also possible to get a Mad Catz Fight Pad, which will be sold alongside Street Fighter IV. The pads feature six front sided buttons as well as improved 8-way directional D-Pad's. More information on the Fight Pad can be found here: http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/946/946596p1.html I don't particularly like IGN that much but it's the first link I found, if you looked around you could find a whole lot more information I'm sure. |

The MadCatz fightpad is pretty, but it has that same shitty kind of Dpad.
I've heard good things about http://www.amazon.com/Hori-Controller-EX-Turbo-Xbox-360/dp/B000HS0Y6K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1234507135&sr=8-2, but it's all sold out at Amazon. I've also seen a mod where you can pluck out the 360's roundpad and drop in a PS2 one (or something comparable), but I'd rather not solder... just yet. What's really important is that you play fighting games and you've used the pad, 'cause fuck all if you can trust the reviews on Amazon. Astroturfing and all that.

Got a Movie Gallery nearby?
Their current in-store circular has a bit on Street Fighter IV, including the introduction of two new controller types for PS3/X360. One is a traditional controller, using a rounded d-pad with a curved-up outside edge for greater diagonal support. It also has 6 buttons on the front (LB and RB were moved). Triggers remain in their usual place. Additionally, they offer a fighting stick, arcade-style with the SF4 layout. 'Course this is only handy if you're big on fighters and don't mind having a controller that is otherwise useless. Step one for getting an X360 controller for fighters - fuck any controller that puts the d-pad in the default position. That is the single most inhumane position for a d-pad in history. Unless you've got bear hands you won't be able to use it effectively. Step two is to make sure the d-pad has good diagonal support. If you can't hit a diagonal consistently, even simple motions are going to be hard to pull off. You know me, so you can safely assume I have an inkling as to what I'm talking about. If you want to do more research, the best advice I can give is to hit up a dedicated fighter forum, ideally www.shoryuken.com - see what advice they can offer.

I think that's what I'll do there. I'm also gonna check out, what was it... dustloop? Hit that shit up.
My buddy might have killed his PS3 controller (sister spilled soda all over it), so I might have parts I can harvest.

Some reviewers you can trust when it comes to reviewing objects like this in terms of general build quality and performance. My SFIV information mostly comes from Eurogamer since the guys reviewing these products for that site are die hard SF / beat 'em up fans who are not afraid to be critical. Ultimately when we are talking about controllers, keyboards or mice it's all about personal feel and for that you're gonna have to get out to some shops which will let you put these products in your hands at the very least. |

I used the SFIV 6 button controller the other day. Wow. I'm going to need to go buy one of those sometime soon, because trying to play with the regular 360 controller was just weird afterward.
