mmmmmmmmmm im sure.

seriously though, its been proven that carbon dioxide retains heat much better than a lot of other gases. take two clear bottles for example, and pump one with CO2, leaving the other full of air, stick thermometers down each one, then screw caps on. leave them in the sun and come back an hour or two later. the CO2 filled bottle will have risen several degrees higher.

Sorry, I think I'm going to believe the 99 out of 100 scientists that think global warming is a serious problem.

Here's an extensive web log contesting what he's saying:

You can argue till you're blue about Global Warming and how its being caused, the fact of the matter is the Earth is still warming up, Global Warming or not.

Its getting warmer, ice is melting, sea levels are rising, weather is becoming more unpredictable. Fact.

yes, it's always a good idea to let a work of fiction influence your ideas about things in the real world :/

If global warming is happening and scientists largely agree that it is happening I think you'll also find that they are split as to why it is happening.

Personally I think, at our current technological level, we have little ability to affect global temperatures one way or the other. I also don't see much of our resources devoted to determining how we might do that and I think those sciences are still in their infancy. Not only do we not know how to move temps one way or the other we also don't know the ramification of doing so. It may very well be that the warming and cooling is part of a larger system which we cannot see now.

No it isn't. But the research and presentation that goes into the read is. The book presents the issue of global warming through a story...then relates it to the reader by providing legit scientific research which is sighted from (mostly non-fiction books from biased-pro global warming scientists) various sources. It is neither for or against global warming.

State of Fear lets you make your up your own mind about the issue and others based upon the scientific research that is presented.

The problem isn't ice caps floating around in the ocean melting. It's the ice sheets that are on top of land - the south pole - that can raise the water level if they melt.

Ice floating around by itself in water melting won't raise the water level a bit.

The problem with "State of Fear" (which I both read and enjoyed as some nice escapist fare, in spite of Crichton's pronouncements in the appendix) is just that... it was based upon the scientific research that is presented.

Unfortunately,
a) he used and "presented" research that fits his premise and his conclusions, and either ignored or discounted research that might have made his stands on the environment at the very least a bit suspect
-and-
b) there has been ongoing and much new research into this very topic, and none of that was included in the book (obviously... and not a criticism).

As others have noted, there is disagreement as to what is actually going on... is it a long term thing? reversible? just the next 10K or so year cycle? mankind hastening? etc etc etc. All that is known for sure is depending on the time scale you want to use (another of the Crichton book problems), that there may or may not be global warming, sea rising. et al.

Me? Dunno.

Seems like a good and wise choice to cut down on burning fossil fuels, not eliminate but cut back, if for no other reason than it gives some additional time for alternate renewable energy sources to be developed.

Seems like a good idea not to spew crap into our air and water... breathing and drinking is like important and stuff.

Seems like a good idea to keep as many species alive as we can, since you never know what medical or technical breakthrough using research on these plant/animal species would save yours or my sorry ass one day.

More perhaps another day, another time... or not.

Soggy, at some point we're going to see an alternative power plant take off and I think it will take off in the same way that DVD's and CD took over for their predecessors. It will happen fast. I don't see it happening in the next year or so but I think we'll see a much faster transition than say like moving from horse drawn vehicles to motorized. Right now there are far too many powerful special interests that keep us locked on the utilization of fossil fuels for the current en vogue power plants.

The Greenhouse Effect is about as real as Santa.

Personally I beleive the scientists that have found through fossil records that the planet goes through a natural warming period every few thousand years. And that is more proof than any other scientist has for global warming.

Or, they can be used to make delicious food like the Ribwich. Mmm....ribwich.

On topic, they have managed to make that E85 ethanol, which is 85% corn and 15% gasoline. And GM is making and asston of "Flex fuel" cars in order to take advantage of that.
