If you make buddies with guys who run or work at guitar shops, they will almost always look at it for free and tell you how much they'll charge to fix it.

AMEN! I have an Ibanez Soundgear that I bought off a girl that was moving for $25, after adjusting the bridge and a new nut, she sings!
Cheap instruments are no substitute for a quality axe, but newbs on starter gear vs newbs on pro gear all sound the same.
