There are pros to using map_b* The versioning allows you to play the previous versions and decide if one particular thing is better than another.
Take medieval as a prime example, I've changed game play drastically in each version (b2,b3,b5). I can go back play the old ones, some people do and I can use them to see what works and what doesn't and mould/revert changes for my next version to suit. Do you even keep versioned .vmfs? I guess not.
