That's the whole thing about classic horror movies.... it's not about uber-fast enemies.... it's about a shitload of them, and requiring skill to defeat them.
Look at the original Dawn of the Dead, and the remake. The remake DID have some humour to it(I enjoyed the rooftop chalkboard exchange... but that was about it)...... but the original had hoards of zombies over-running the living, because they were a: (human side)disorganized & outnumbered and b: (zombie side) required destruction of the brain to destroy them. In a way it was balanced.... but the living ended up with the short end of the stick the longer it went on. The living DID have their brains to rely on.... which balanced against the sheer numbers they were against.
