It's irrelevant if a game is dead or not. Every other game on the planet has leagues that adopt, and eventually require, all league participants to have the latest content or to ship off.
The TF community is an incredibly small niche. Nobody worth their salt is going to go back to HL to play competitively in a fortress style game. There is TF2 which looks and plays much more smoothly.
It's
fine if there are two, three, four, eighteen, three hundred games that a league has. You'd be hard pressed to find
any leagues that still run Quake leagues. Why? Because
QUAKE 2 EXISTS. Any leagues that
do exist have very few members and don't play ever.
There
is a reason why Quake 3 and 4 are played
more than Quake 1 and 2. There is a reason why Call of Duty is not played in leagues and CoD2 and 4 are (3 is exempt from this as it did not come out for PC... however, if it had nobody would be playing CoD2).
There
is a reason why leagues and competitions for SC include the expansion.
There
is a reason why TF is no longer played competitively on Q1,2 or 3 and is slowly dying in HL. I'll give you a hint. It's not because the game is boring.
