in a DX9 game. As far as compatibility goes, rarely is it ever a hardware issue so if you're seeing problems now, they'll likely be fixed in an update -- whether that be video drivers or OS updates. Playing the DX10 game path vs. the DX9 game path is a different story though...
DX10 isn't about maxing your frames, its about maxing your playing experience while keeping the gameplay smooth. This means that you can enable more detail/lighting/shaders while taking a minimal hit to your performance. People have based their card strength on gaming at 100+ fps for far too long and I'm quite glad the industry is trying to move away from that. As long as you average more than 40 fps, you're fine. IMO, higher playable settings > higher fps
