Map naming!

I guess we've all pretty much agreed to prefix our Fortress Forever maps with FF_
But...what if you've found out someone else is planning on using the same cool name you planed to use on your level? How to best resolve the issue? I mean, I'm not personally having the issue but I can see it comming up. Lots of folk are using pretty basic level names that still have cool factor. Very easy to find some overlap with that thinking though since...

I really dont see this being an issue, why bring it up when you do not have this issue either? Also I do not think many are wanting to prefix the map with ff_ looking in the maps in production thread. I think I read somewhere in some thread that the Dev team do not wish for community maps to be prefixed, Unless this idea has been quashed, or if you do prefix the map it will not work, leaving room for something else to ensure semi-regular updates keeping the mod alive and talked about. Only dev team approved maps can carry the ff_ prefix which i think is a great idea, saves sivving through the endless crap maps that will be made if you only want the cream of the crop.

My advice is state your working on a map with its name, then if there is any conflict to who has the "right" to use it then the date will be suficciant to resolve any argument. Of cource this will have to have wip screen shots to back up any future map name claim, no point in listing a 100 names in the event of maybe using one of them.

I believe the community and the FF team stated at one point that maps should/will not be prefixed "FF_" but prefixed something like "CTF_" or "AD_" etc. denoting the map type instead of the mod (since if the map is part of the mod, it's obviously part of the mod).

This put me off at first, but it makes a lot of sense. It's nice to know what kind of map you're getting into just by looking at it on the maplist.

sniper duel?

I have a really great idea. Anyone who uses the word "fort" in their map name gets shot. Come on, people, use some creativity!

Ditto.

Also, you can't really do things like put ctf_ or ad_ on map names. This is TF, remember? There are no fixed game types. Actually, it'd be more accurate to say that you can't put simple prefixes on the names of most maps. You'd wind up with things like teams_take_turns_bringing_as_many_flags_to_the_ene my_base_as_possible_destructication. ff_destructication* is much easier, and you still know what you're getting. ff_-ing maps makes them easy to find online too, as others have pointed out.

Also, I am planning to put ff_ on ff maps I make.

*I'm not using this name, so someone else can use it if they want :)

o_jinx 08-09-2005 02:29 PM

I'm doing the ff_ prefix as well. Will get back to work on ff_ramparts soon I hope

What I do when naming maps, is look through a book, or just sit and look at random things.

** We will look out for FF_Lampshade **

What we did in the DoD forums was to have a thread and everybody said which maps they were doing, had a list etc. Much like the list at the top, you couldn't reserve a name without doing any part of the map. Stops people booking names in advance.

Basically it was first come first serve, then once it was released it was final.

Does this mean I'll need to rename my super-secret up and coming map (currently called ff_fort)?

o_frenchtoast 08-10-2005 04:34 PM

Hold on, why prefix with ff? The original maps weren't tfc_well, so you're ruining the titles!

o_kam 08-10-2005 04:47 PM

This has already been discussed, shut up guys k.

Sifn't lock.

o_drtom 08-10-2005 04:47 PM

so we will know to avoid the ones that start ff_ ? :P

o_ivaqual 08-10-2005 04:55 PM

there should be ff_ put as a prefix. since there is going to be a lot remakes looking for ff_whatever will immediately return the ff version, excluding the original tfc ones wich will likely come up first in the search results

If you just type something like 2fort in google, then you'll get a LOT of shit you don't need. Something like "Fortress Forever 2fort map" would do a lot better.

o_ivaqual 08-10-2005 05:08 PM

my point exactly.

right, that's it started, so i don't want anyone else releasing anything called fish_hill.

o_imbrifer 08-10-2005 06:16 PM

fisheye, you're such a tease. Be sure to post that you're making the map (and the shots) in this thread: http://forums.fortress-forever.com/viewtopic.php?t=860

Circuitous 08-10-2005 07:04 PM

That looks pretty damn sweet, fish.

Defrag 08-11-2005 01:20 AM

That looks quite interesting :)
As for the thread topic: I'd hope that people have the common sense to name their maps appropriately. I.e. use names like ff_2fort_dk or whatever your handle is unless the map is official or original. It should generally avoid a lot of problems.

E.g. Say person A wants to remake osaka and calls it ff_osaka. Then say we release Osaka for FF and call it... ff_osaka. Hello conflicts. Person A should've named his map ff_osaka_balony or whatever. Common sense should prevail with this issue, I trust. Nothing is ever perfect, though :P

o_zorro 08-11-2005 02:19 AM

ill just name my maps zorrosmap1 and zorrosmap2
