Explosion decal

If possible, where do I find the grenade/rocket explosion decal? I would like it to be darker so it's easier to see where the grenade/rocket hit.

You can find these in the "source materials" GCF. materials/decals
scorch1.vtf
scorch1.vmt
scorch1_subrect.vmt
scorch2.vtf
scorch2.vmt
scorch2_subrect.vmt
scorch3.vtf
scorch3.vmt
scorch3_subrect.vmt

make sure to point the .vmt files to the file you edit.

OK, now, the .vtfs are just a black square so I don't really know how to edit them. Is there something I have to change in the .vmts to make the decal darker?

Its black because your viewing all colors. You need to click on view-channel-A ( thats for vtfedit ) to view the alpha channel, because the image has transparency. As for editing, i would just make a new 128 x 128 image, then save as a .png or .gif file. Then import it and save as your new .vtf

Thanks. I don't have any idea how I did it or what even happened, but my explosion decal is now much darker. I screwed around with some stuff and just made the decal 10x worse but then when I thought I had changed everything back to default it became perfect.

actually, the explosion decal is no longer in the source GCF. I removed it in 2.0, because I needed to make it lighter. Now its in the materials/decals FF folder (if I remember correctly)

If you edit any of the source GCF images, just pop em into the corresponding folder in FF, and you'll be good to go.

The game looks to FF source folders first, if it can't find em there, then it pulls from the source engines GCF files.

Its darker because you used the original image that FF used in 1.0, which was 100 times darker. see my above post for solution

idk about that. I didnt have any scorches, so I had to pull them from the .gcf

So you are the one who took off the black explosion decal?

Kudos to you then =D In fact, I was going to post a suggestion about making the decal lighter just before 2.1 release

Thanks again!

Yeah, OK, I get it now (I think). What I did was that I screwed up the Decals_Lit.vtf that was already in the materials/decals folder and then I decided it was easier to just copy over the one from the source materials file which was (without me knowing) a lot darker.

If this is it, then the easiest solution to making your explosion decal darker is to just copy over the Decals_lit.vtf that you find in the source materials.gcf

[AE] 5316 *TKZ* 11-04-2008 02:33 PM

Yea, all I did for it was give it a bit more transparency on the alpha layer, so you wont notice any difference between it and the source original, unless you're looking at the alpha channel
