This week, Citrix announced a new enterprise-class version of Citrix XenServer™... at no cost. The announcement marks two firsts: the new XenServer is the first (and only) free virtualization offering to include live migration of virtual machines, and it is the first to provide free, centralized multi-server management—both widely considered killer features. Citrix expects the new XenServer to be a boon to organizations seeking to adopt server virtualization more broadly throughout the datacenter while keeping acquisition costs low.
I have 4 dell 2950 running in a pool each with 8 cores and 10gb of ram all connected to a san cluster (2 san's @ 7tb ea) in raid 10 with high availability

citrix just took a huge shit on vmwares doorstep and lit it on fire.

word. too bad I'm still using proprietary technology, until the company gets off their ass and makes it software.

Actually they didn't. The Citrix 'Essentials" package is pay for play. The tools that make that valuable will cost you. BTW, one of my developer roles is technology evaluation...Vmware, Virtual Machine, Xen, Hyper-V...etc. Sadly I think that Hyper-V will likely win due to the decreased cost of licensing.

No, this shit that makes this valuable is being able to pool and use HA on the free version and use centralized management with the free version .. that and I already have essentials since the company I work for is partnered with a local Citrix partner.

"I already have essentials since the company I work for is partnered with a local Citrix partner."

How is that different from what I posted? Without The Essentials...you would not have access to the features that make this ideal. Anyway you have the ESXi which is already (or will be shortly) positioned to compete with this "free" version.

Respectfully I disagree with your position that "citrix just took a huge shit on vmwares doorstep and lit it on fire."

For that matter....Hyper-V is "free" as well.

my friend runs the IT dept where he works. just before he went on holiday, his colleague decided to install it, and he promptly found some sort of security issues, which meant his holiday was dogged by angry phonecalls. i can ask him about it if you like, i cant remember the details..

Shadow00Caster 02-26-2009 03:53 PM

I know there were security issues with 4.1, but ya that would be cool if you could ask for me .. right now I have this all in a sandbox sitting in server room so I don't care, but no way i'm going production with security issue.

mervaka 02-27-2009 12:20 AM

ok, so apparently the security flaw was that his colleague was too naive to disable the RDP client! whoops

Shadow00Caster 02-27-2009 04:22 AM

ya that would do it...

Crazycarl 02-27-2009 10:10 PM

I don't know what any of this means, but I love the thread title. Why would mervaka want to look at your cummy pants?

Besides owning a Hybrid car, the 2nd leading cause of smug is IT elitism.

Shadow00Caster 02-28-2009 01:46 AM

Server rooms are immune to fart .. too man fans and filters.
