Getting started

Hello all,

For those who don't know me I am a former TFC player/mapper/avi maker (predominantly in the field of concing), the reason I have nipped in here may turn out to be a whimsical fad that I discard after a few beers, however incase I do see this through I would like some guidance.

I have been reminicing lately about the good times I had in TFC and the enjoyment I took from mapping, whilst I still have some unfinished TFC mapping projects I would like to see through I have also been thinking about trying my hand at FF mapping. I have, however, no idea where to start or even what programs to use (I assume my trusty VHE won't do the pretty things I see in FF).

I'm not asking for anyone to hold my hand every step of the way, just a few pointers to get me started and possibly some bouncing back and forth of ideas at a later date. As I mentioned this may turn out to be a flash in the pan idea so please, anyone who advises me don't be disappointed or aggrieved if this fizzles out into nothing.

I will give you a good reply tomorrow - bit knackered atm. But we do use VHE (that is if you mean valve hammer editor). I'll PM you my email to add me on steam if you like... I'll happily talk to you about any questions you might have while mapping.

Hammer is included in the Source SDK in the tools section of Steam. There's a lot more to cover, but that is the necessary starting point.

Yeah, get the source SDK from Steam, and run Hammer in 2006 mode. FF adds a few entities to the list, so you will need fortressforever.fgd, which you can find in your FortressForever folder.

http://www.fortress-forever.com/wiki...=Mapping_Intro That link is a bit out of date and the pictures need fixed, but it's mostly correct.

All our game logic is controlled by Lua scripts. If you want a CTF map, for example, you just put in two flags and two capture zones, and some spawns, and the script takes care of everything. see http://www.fortress-forever.com/wiki...etting_Started and http://www.fortress-forever.com/wiki...=Map_Templates

If you want to do anything more complex, you can write your own scripts.

If you are looking to create conc maps, I could help you...

Hi Renegade :D, this is cLoWnEh from TFC

You will find mapping for Source is so much easier than it was on TFC with all the extra features the Source hammer has. I'm not sure what type of maps you plan on making (I know you made conc maps in TFC) but we sure could use some more decent public server maps. Anyhow I hope you stick with the game as it's really fun and has a lot of potential :D
