Conan is leaving NBC.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ –– Conan O'Brien released the following statement.

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

A big news day on all fronts, but this tops my list. Maybe he'll go to another channel and write a good chunk of his jokes again.

That last bit made me smile. Conan is one classy guy.

<sarcasm> Sheesh, what a bad day for NBC. </sarcasm>

I've never really liked Conan... but I really think he's getting a shit deal here. I'm not a fan of Leno, either.... but I truly would respect him alot more if he refused, or at least protested this move. He willingly gave up the Tonight Show to Conan.

Part of me hopes Conan moves to another network, and burries NBC in the ratings, just on the principle of it.

Etzell 01-12-2010 09:33 PM

Leno's a dickhead. He's FINALLY had to come to terms with the fact that he's just not that funny, and he can't handle it. Sucks that they're doing that to Conan, especially because I was finally happy I could watch both Conan and Craig Ferguson... but oh well.

KubeDawg 01-12-2010 10:30 PM

No Etzell, I don't think Jay realizes he's not funny. I think he realizes he's soon to be out of a job and makin no more money. Greed.

FrenchToast 01-13-2010 02:32 AM

<3 Conan, and this sucks, but the man has principles and dignity. Kudos.

Maybe he'll go to FOX, what with them having The Simpsons, a show he used to write for.

Would be neat.

KubeDawg 01-13-2010 02:27 PM

Whoa whoa, lets not get too hasty.

Lost 01-13-2010 05:17 PM

He definitely deserves something good, he did pay for his cast's wages during the writers strike.

I don't see how it's that odd. The Simpsons and Family guy are there. He'd fit in humor wise on that channel. Plus, FOX lacks a late night talk show guy.

Etzell 01-14-2010 05:48 PM

Credge, he wouldn't fit in on Fox. The Simpsons has been pretty awful since Conan left. It's hardly even the same show.

I have the pleasure of attending The SF Sketchfest Tribute to Conan O'Brien with Conan O'Brien/Andy Richter, hosted by Jimmy Pardo in 3 days. Should be interesting, to say the least.

Which is why he would fit in on FOX, no? I doubt he's going to backseat the guy he replaced (not talking about Leno).

You should send me tickets. As in your tickets and then send me a plane ticket. For me. To fly in a plane.

FrenchToast 01-15-2010 08:44 PM

Pwned.

I had the pleasure of having this canceled and rescheduled to a yet-to-be-announced later date.

Oh, and the other shows I saw at Sketchfest this year were beyond phenomenal.

You know, my offer of you sending me some plane tickets and then giving me your tickets for the show is still up.
